Huh, today was weirdly relaxing. I'd accidentally turned my 5:30am alarm ON when I re-set it, and I never fell back into solid sleep after that, but I feel like I got a good amount of sleep. I worked on "overdue" posts and didn't feel crunched for time (I tend to feel like I need to have an open block of umpteen hours in order to get anything done). Okay, so I didn't feel confident enough of my free time to email Scott to try to set up a phonecall, but...

Last night, walking past the new condo complex on Broadway, thinking about how Prof.D's selling his condo and I'm probably going to have to move out of my apartment, I was feeling like I wanted to buy a condo.  Though as Meredith pointed out tonight, that involves condo fees and negotiating with people you only sort of know/live with, which kind of defeats a lot of the purpose of living alone.  I honestly don't mind living with people, I'm just tired of the stress associated with this revolving door thing.  I should e-mail Cailin about realtors and stuff.  And, y'know, actually have conversations with my current roomies so I have a more solid understanding of what the situation going forward looks like.

My continued (probably unwarranted) anxiety about work had eased a little by the mid-/late-afternoon.

I should get back into the habit of praying more -- like on my morning walk to work like I was doing for a while.

I read and feedbacked some fic today, which made me feel at least mildly productive.

One of them was [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza's "A Van, a Plane, a Car, and a Bus" (The West Wing S7 Josh/Donna).  When we were watching the series over lunch at work, I would comment on how Josh and Donna were much like me and Eric.  Reading this fic reminded me a lot of another relationship, and of course I would frequently comment on how similar Eric and Terry were.  So yeah, I seem to have a little bit of a type.  Which makes sense on reflection, though it isn't exactly the type I would have expected had you asked me some years back what I thought my type would be.  And it's interesting thinking about why that type and the good and bad things that can come with that; yay for information going forward.

I did ~25+min in the weight room this morning, including trying out a new machine.  I had scrambled eggs and a banana for breakfast.

Nothing available for lunch was really appealing to me, so I got a large potato leek soup and yogurt with granola -- and ate most of MaryAlice's chocolate crème brûlée.  She only wanted a few bites, and Katie was still working on her own salad and opted to just go get her very own dessert later.

Ranjan had Panda Puffs (a peanut butter puffed corn cereal) for lunch and asked if any of us wanted some.
I quipped: "Is it made with real live pandas?"  (I have so turned into my dad.  I totally do the "made with real Girl Scouts" thing every time.)
Ranjan: "No, they're dead."

We were talking about baseball over lunch, and MaryAlice mentioned Dice-K, and Katie mentioned that they share a birthday.
MaryAlice: "You're September..."
Katie: "13th."
MaryAlice (to me): "And you're the 9th of July."
me: "Yes.  I'm impressed."
MaryAlice: "And you want Prince Shells and... Cheese for your birthday."  [We were talking about this earlier, before Katie joined us -- I was saying I was sad I haven't been able to find Prince Shells & Cheese (MaryAlice thought it was "Shells and Cheddar," but I was fairly certain it's "Shells and Cheese") in supermarkets, and how my parents had gotten me a few boxes for Christmas.]
Katie: "You are?  What am I getting you?  We can't split that."
MaryAlice: "We can get her a case."
Katie: "They're like 39 cents a box."
me: "I know.  I'm like the cheapest date -- I mean birthday girl -- ever."

Oh, and earlier, MaryAlice and Katie were talking about Top Chef and Katie said of someone, "he's such a... dink," and I said, "I have't heard that word in forever" (and made a ♥ with my hands over my heart) and she said, "Neither have I."

The invitations for the post-Commencement celebratory free lunch and afternoon off came in this afternoon's mail.  I had totally forgotten about that.

Per my last entry, my mom commented:
I was thinking there's a broader word than "butch" for doing hard things. And was reminded that when you were wee, Aunt Marian reminded your grandparents to include "tough" in the words describing you. That we wanted you to believe you were tough as well as adorable. I certainly don't think you are a hard person, but tough enough.

VH1 actually plays music videos.  This morning I saw J.Lo's "Do It Well" (YouTube).  I . . . don't even know.

I forget how it came up, but I told Greg and Katie about the modern day Trojan Horse experiment.

I go back and forth about how much I want to see Southland Tales (see May 29, 2005 entry and May 31, 2006 entry).  Today I saw this entry.  I was not taken with Donnie Darko, but I inexplicably wanna see Southland Tales.  [IMDb lists a limited US release date of Nov. 7, 2007.]

At lunch, Katie got brussel sprouts with her salad, and I said I thought I really didn't like them as a child, but I tried them once in college and thought, "Well, doesn't suck."  She cracked up.  I'm still not used to being considered funny -- and I'm a little concerned, because it feels like laughing *at,* but I know she means it well.  She said I remind her a lot of Daria.  Is that not one of the highest compliments?  (Why is that show not out on DVD, btw?  Okay, wikipedia provides me some answers.)

Over lunch, the Muppets came up somehow.  Eric said there was gonna be a "Who Wants to Be a Muppet?" but I think he is either lying or delusional.  (Yes, I Googled.)  MaryAlice talked about the Swedish Chef lobster sketch, which sounded hysterical, but I found it on YouTube and didn't think it was that funny.

One of Prof.B's former students e-mailed:
Hope you're doing well.  Not sure if you remember but I was in your Incentives class during the 2003/2004 school year.  I don't think I ever got to tell you, but I really enjoyed your class and it has been instrumental in my career over the years.  Not sure if you've seen this video but it could be a fun one to show your classes.
Attached was a .wmv of the bud.tv "swear jar" commercial.  (YouTube)  It is hysterical.

On my way out of work, I think I saw two guys kissing.

And I am up to an audience of 4 for my most recent sowrong fic pairing.  Guess I really do have to finish that fic I was working on *checks* 2 years ago [early August, 2005].

Game Night tonight at Trelawney and Eric's new place in Wakefield.

Her twin sister and family were there at the beginning, along with Michele from CWM.  I learned that Michele watches HIMYM -- and Heroes.  Nice.  She brought Scene It, but Mike and I weren't really excited about that, plus (more importantly) Mike's work acquaintance Tyler and Michele had both never played Apples to Apples before.  Michele had to leave not too long in, but we did play a few rounds, and she won one hand giving Eric "My Love Life" (the "my" on a card always refers to the Judge) for some positive adjective (Luxurious?).  Later we got the entertainment of Eric arguing that Trelawney's baked beans are Revolutionary.

I got Intelligent (for Men in Black?) and Stereotyped (for Sunday Drivers).  I gave Michelle Dangerous (for Snakes, beating out toys -- which could have won for the entertainment value, if people had argued it in a sexual fashion -- because she argued Snakes on a Plane) and Sue Mystical (for Swiss Chocolate).  Oh and I gave Friendly the win with "Canadians" -- which Michelle validated as beating out Carnival Workers (which I think was her card); I think the winner was Tyler's card.

Mike drove me to and from Game Night.  Tyler just moved to the area (from Ohio?) less than a month ago, and Mike was telling me about how he was asking Mike about places to meet people.  I said I wouldn't even know what to tell people, and said I was so grateful that I found communities of people (church and work) relatively quickly, but finding available people I'd be interested in and who like girls?  Yeah, hard.  And honestly, I'd rather spend what limited time I have cultivating the friendships I have, but I know sometime I will want that and I really don't have good ideas for how to go about it.

I watched the CSI premiere (see preceding entry) and found that CBS doesn't show streaming video of Without a Trace.  Not watching the show wouldn't be all that much of a sacrifice, but I am gonna have to get a new tv soonish so I can watch DVDs etc., so I'd like to be able to just jump back in.

A TV/DVD combo is like $200. Even just a tv is like $100.  A DVD/VCR player is like $100, and I think I'm gonna get that, so that if the TV craps out I can still play VHS as well as DVD.

I also need to solve my CD-burner problem.  (In case you missed my post/s, I can't find the USB cord.)

I know, I know, first world problems (as gloss put it recently).

I hadn't realized [until I wikipediaed] that Rosh Hashanah begins a period of Ten Days of Repentance; I had just thought it coincidental that Yom Kippur was so soon after.  I really need to learn more about the Jewish Holy Days.

On a lighter note: Sharon reposted a fabulous Rosh Hashanah joke.

Around 4pm today I finally stopped feeling like I had three different things I should be taking care of right at that moment. Of course, when I was heading home I remembered a bunch of things I should have taken care of.

Gymming in the morning has been working out, though it's definitely making my bedtime earlier.

I did the elliptical, cross training program again.
1mi @ 12:20min
2mi @ 24:52min
2.38(?)mi @ 30min

I wonder if there's some sort of law of diminishing returns involved -- that I should only be doing this every other day, give my body a rest (do weights or something on the off days).  But I don't feel sore or exhausted or anything -- I'm just slower-moving on the elliptical.

Walking to my building from the gym, it was too beautiful out to be inside, so I went to my office, dropped my stuff off, and then walked around campus for 15 minutes.

Work was calmer.  Though I was potentially actually less productive because of it.  But I was forward-thinking and proactive at times.

Burritos are the new pasta (i.e., food I eat every day at Spangler).  Possibly I will go back to salad at some point.

Amy says I am "AWESOME."

Nicki had lunch with us today and asked about our (Katie's and my) travels.  Ranjan came in partway through Katie's story-telling.  Filling him in, Nicki said: "We've heard about Ecuador... and cuy... which is guinea pig... on a stick."  Priceless!

Man, I love P!nk's "U + Ur Hand" so much.

I did the elliptical at the gym again.

Yesterday morning, FormerUnitHead called on his way to class across the river, asking if I could get a copy of this 1993 New Yorker article that he was gonna need 30 copies of for class. It's on the syllabus for next Monday, so he was gonna need copies to distribute in class on Wednesday. I with Nicole in B's office when he called, so he left a voicemail. I made assorted efforts to track down a copy and learned that my best bet was to brave the stacks of Widener and make a photocopy from a bound volume. So I called him back (leaving a voicemail since by this time he was in class) telling him this and saying I have to go by the Yard on my way home anyway, so unless he has a better idea, but call me back and lemme know. I hear nothing, so after class I go and get this taken care of. I get in this morning and there's a voicemail message from him from 8:05 this morning saying I don't need to do that, his co-teacher has an old xerox, so they'll just make copies from that. He was apologetic, and proof of my fondness for him is that I feel not at all annoyed.

I left my house this morning and there was a definite coating of snow on the ground.  At first I thought the snow in the air was just loose snow blowing, but at least some of it was definitely falling fresh.  Had a beautiful six-pointed star on the lapel of my coat for a while.  ♥

I caught up on Heroes schtuff today.  (Eric was mysteriously absent, so I didn't get to chat with him about last night's episode.)

Thoughts on comic #12 "Super-heroics"?
"Wireless" is interesting, though that kind of story doesn't ping me.  Adds interesting info to the HRG story.  I disapprove of that silhouette in Part 3, though.  nbc.com's "Wireless" clip won't load on my computer, but [livejournal.com profile] athene proffered the YouTube link.  That was what really pulled me in.
#17 "How do you stop an exploding man?" also has some interesting stuff.

When I got on the train at Harvard to come home, there weren't any convenient open poles, so I actually took a seat (something I rarely do).  I'm reading Octavia Butler's Fledgling and apparently got more absorbed in it than I thought 'cause I got off the train and oops, I was at Alewife.  I've actually never been inside Alewife T Station, so that was kinda neat.  If I had a more solid idea as to how to walk home from there I would have just gone out and walked, but there are a bunch of highways around there and I don't really know which direction to go in, so I just got back on the train.

Um, just a little while ago I went to turn on the hot water and nothing came out.  Turn the cold water faucet and water comes out, but nothing when turning the hot water faucet.  Er, note to self: set alarm for early, so if this persists I can take a shower at the HBS gym. [Edit: I did indeed get a hot shower at home the next morning. Yay.]

SmoothieGuy was in hiding this morning, but Amanda got me a 7-11 cinnamon roll (was more like a glazed donut, but that's okay) as a thank you for my help these past couple weeks, and I ended up not being hungry again until late in the day.

I learned from Amanda that Green Line service to Lechmere restored as of this past Saturday -- though it's only the E line that goes out that far.

She also shared amusing stories about her cat, Milo, and I'm not a cat person, but I was still muchly amused.

I was realizing last night that I didn't watch WWE this past Friday.  (Though honestly, I only watch on occasion and am usually bored by most of it.)  Then I heard from Jackie that Eddie Guerrero died (yesterday).  I hated the storylines they've had him in, but damn.  Eddie is survived by his wife Vickie and daughters Shaul, 14, Sherilyn, 9, and Kaylie Marie, 3.  The official site, of course, does not talk about his history of drug and alcohol abuse, which I found through GoogleNews, but supposedly he'd been sober for 4 years.  Age 38, damn.  That seems so young to be dead, though for an active wrestler that seems old to still be pushing your body like that.

Not safe for work 'cause i m ded from laughter: this thread from [livejournal.com profile] stultiloquentia's list of overused words/phrases in Spuffy smut.

[livejournal.com profile] tkp's guilty pleasures in fanfic comment thread is also at times very amusing -- e.g. this thread with dlgood on Angel's Felix Unger-ness and this comment from tkp about the usage of "orbs" for eyes.

As an offshoot of the misogyny, femslash, etc., debates, people have been posting lists of their favorite female characters -- frequently with explanations.  I decided I should probably participate/contribute, and predictably it has turned into more discussing than listing, so I suspect that's what I'll be occupying myself with this week when work is slow.  Am wondering whether I should just discuss the characters that particularly ping with me or if I should also include the kick-ass women I find appealling and/or great to watch.  Also: what about the ones who are great in theory even if canon doesn't particularly realize them as such *cough*Hermione*cough* ? [Also: Must try so hard to be true to spirit of meme and not go off on tangents about why assorted female characters don't particularly do it for me.]

[livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4 polled her friends about which fandoms they're a part of. I basically consider myself part of a fandom if i know all the source text and care to engage in meta&fic re: said source text. My instinct is to just say Whedonverse when asked which fandoms i'm part of, so it was interesting to really think about what else i would consider myself part of fandom for (and some of it sounds so weird to call fandom).
