hermionesviolin: black and white photo of Emma Watson as Hermione, with text "hermionesviolin" (hermione by oatmilk)
Eric's S1 Heroes DVD came today, so since MaryAlice was out he suggested we watch the original premiere episode (i.e., the one shown at Comic-Con last year).  spoilers, duh )

The DVD started with Previews, the first of which was for Bionic Woman.  I mentioned that I refuse to watch it because they hired IW.  The conversation about that got me thinking about how there aren't any new shows this coming year that I'm planning to watch and also how I can't actually remember how/why I decided to watch Heroes last year, which I find interesting.

After work, I returned books to the div school library and decided instead of heading back to Harvard Square directly I'd wander a bit.  I made my way to Beacon St. and ended up following to back to close to Porter Square, at which point I decided to just take Oxford St. back to Harvard.  To my surprise, I encountered RA-Claire on the way.  She was heading to her last Urban Rebounding class, so we didn't chat long, but this is her last week (shamefully, I actually thought she had left much earlier this summer) so she said we should get together for coffee or ice cream or something, which would be nice.

University Health Services is once again reminding me that I haven't had a PAP smear.  I haven't had a physical in I don't know how many years, so I suppose I should get on that.

I'm also flirting with the idea of actually learning to drive.

I think my flickr photos are as organized/tagged/described as they're gonna get.  ohmigod, why is there no mass edit tool for changing privacy settings?  I had everything Private so I could get it all sorted, but then I had to go back and mark each one public when I was done.  (I had really good hair at WriterCon.  I'd forgotten that.  Looking at those photos also made me miss Lorraine and company.)

Anyway, Europe photos.

(I should probably also do a combined-and-abbreviated set for slideshow when I see my grandma in a couple weeks, but that can wait a bit since it is over a week away -- though yes, I'm sure you all would appreciate it as well.)

[livejournal.com profile] mosca posted a link to this thing that generates "cat macros."  Despite being fairly indifferent to the cat macro phenomenon, I was curious and tried it for my LJ.  I was actually jarred by the results because it just plunks the Subject Lines onto pictures of cats, so I found myself with this expectational disconnect because it didn't lol-speak-ize the text or anything.  Huh.  Interesting.

some of the results I was fond of )

I haven't quite figured out how to hook up my digital camera to my computer (and there are also disposable camera photos from when my digital camera was being dodgy), but Gillian has her pictures up on facebook -- which okay, only helps the few of you who have her friended, but still.  I am really excited about posting my photos, though -- in part because I was playing with my camera at the Belfast Botanic Garden and now have a great shot of me looking sullen which I so want to be my new facebook photo (and possibly an LJ icon as well).

P.S. Gillian, Pastor Tiffany e-mailed me:
Elizabeth,

I wrote about our chance meeting in Wales on the CWM blog and wanted to ask you if I could post the picture of us and use your name. At the moment you are an anonymous, genderless, generic "parishioner."

I hope the rest of your travels are going well.

Paz,

Tiffany
The line At the moment you are an anonymous, genderless, generic "parishioner." made me giggle.  And then I actually read the blogpost, and she actually refers to it as "the hinterlands of Northern Wales"!!!  (Okay, this is only funny to us, but still.)

Edit: The photo is now up on the blogpost.

My work computer has a DVD drive and I can't make it play CDs.  Gar.  (The computer has Real Player, which will play mp3s, but I can't make it just play the contents of the D drive.)

Good things about today:
+ nice weather
+ Sarah sent me the photo that she took of me with the "Sparkling Bean" cow at Copley.
+ Becca replied to my e-mail.  (Seminary?  Whoa.)
+ actual meeting with Prof.B. !!!
+ and as a consequence actually did useful stuff today instead of staring uselessly at the computer all day
+ watched "Serenity" (pilot episode, not movie -- note quotation marks rather than italics) with Eric; for more joy read the writeup of the experience
+ got a positive review on my Lilah/Faith fic over at Notorious
+ finally got swipe card access to FormerUnitHead's office
+ v. positive reaction to a concrit I left, leading to discussion of post-"Chosen" Dawn and also of Xander generally
+ I bought the new Ani CD for $10.49 incl. tax thanks to a Newbury Comics coupon from [livejournal.com profile] hedy.  (The regular NC price is $10.88 vs. the $15.99 sticker.)
+ The landlord put in the right screen in my bedroom window.  (Yeah, the previous tenant swapped out the screen for one that didn't fit.  I don't ask questions.)

When I came home the painter was still working -- was until about when I left -- so WJMN was blasting the whole time.  I don't dislike the station, but I wasn't thrilled about the volume.  Since I was leaving soon I just let it go, though.  When he left he said he was all done, so I have my apartment back now.  It'll take a couple days for the paint smell to really vanish, but still.

Wine-tasting was cancelled, so we hung out at Mike's for a while.  (I ordered pumpkin ravioli 'cause I was intrigued, but then they were out of it so I got mushroom ravioli instead; and I forget that ravioli comes with tomato sauce, but it scraped off easily; the ravioli didn't really taste like much, which as I'm me isn't inherently a problem, but I was looking forward to some sort of mushroom taste.)  Then they went bowling but I was feeling tired and am never keen on bowling, so I came home.  Am debating whether I'm tired enough to actually go to bed now.

We went out to lunch today for Mary Alice's birthday, and within moments of sitting down, Eric and I were, as Mary Alice put it, bickering like an old married couple. This analogy is so very true (and frightens me perhaps less than it should). [Though her true for-the-win analogy was that cooking without onions is like having sex without kissing. This was prompted by a reminder of the fact that I don't like onions, but I do still really enjoy the analogy.]

P.S. I haven't finished up my roll of film, so I haven't yet scanned and posted my WriterCon pictures, but Lorraine has, and this one of Michaela and me doesn't suck. [Not a dig at Lorraine's the photographers' skills but a statement of my own feeling that I am not photogenic.]
hermionesviolin: (dragons)
I'm so not photogenic, but for some reason i really like the picture Lez took of me from Winter Weekend.

Is it almost March already? Trying to do a site update less than 2 weeks before Spring Break is not brilliant. I still need to send feedback e-mails on various pieces. And write rec blurbs for various things i've already tagged. Oh, productive things filling the spaces when i step away from the piles of productive things that affect my GPA. I really don't ever turn my brain off, do i? (No wonder sleep looks like such an attractive proposition.) [Edit: Oh, and i have ficathon fics i need to finish, too. *facepalm* ]

I'm going to 2 of the Mollie Rogers events tomorrow -- partly because i got more work done today than i had expected to, and partly because i am reminded that i can't work for extended periods of time without breaks.

I need to stop downloading stuff people post on YouSendIt because i have like no space left in my computer. Speaking of... i downloaded scads of mp3s back before buffymusic.net died and Smith put up firewalls liek whoa. If i uploaded them to YSI, would anyone be interested?

I am such a h0r. Tangent's selling t-shirts that say "social construct" with an arrow pointing up and an arrow pointing down, and i bought one. I really want an "Everyone loves a cunning linguist." t-shirt (sold by the Debate Team). Should i get pink w/ black writing, or black w/ pink writing?

Layna reminded me of when my dad used to make french fries from scratch. I kind of miss that. [Edit the second: One learns something new everyday. My parents often sing "food, glorious food" -- just that one line -- and i learned from Emma tonight that that's from Oliver.]
hermionesviolin: (train)
Meg and i missed each other on Thursday, and Moriah had to cancel on me for Friday. Life is pain, as Meg said. Only, not really. My life is not Tess of the d’Urbervilles (which is nigh on 400 pages and which i didn’t start in earnest until Friday, because i suck). P.S. Oh, memories.

Friday was positively balmy. Predictions of snow, what? Crazies. I slept in, had a leisurely lunch, did assorted errands including laundry and finally putting a picture of myself up on facebook. Thursday night i finally posted to [livejournal.com profile] slashthekey and [livejournal.com profile] futureverse.

And yeah, there endeth-ed the productivity. On Friday i hung out with people -- or at least Emma -- from tea (4pm) until nearly 10pm. Though i did do lots of Tess reading afterward. And finished it on Saturday. (Oh, textual entrances into slash, how i love thee.) Now i just have to read Death of a Salesman and do my reader response journal for The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (and reread and take notes on the end of Surprised by Joy). That’s for tomorrow. For now, fanfic to quell the Hit With Big Sticks feeling that carried me through most of the novel.

ZOE: You sanguine about the kinda reception we're apt to receive on an Alliance ship, Captain?
MAL: Absolutely. (then) What's sanguine?
ZOE: Hopeful. Plus, item of interest, it also means bloody.
MAL: Well, that pretty much covers the options, don't it?
-Firefly, “Safe”

Every time i read the name Angel Clare i kept thinking of Angel Juan. Oh, things i don’t have the time to reread.

209 rearranged their room, so i swapped my bookcase for a 4-shelved one. The shelves aren’t as deep as my old one, but that’s almost a non-issue; and there are 4 shelves instead of 3, which is the important part. And the dark wood is yummy.

Friday, Felicia called me and Emma (and Cat?) repressed. Somehow not the word that usually comes to mind. And it’s possible i’ll never be able to look at pineapples with a straight face again, at least around certain people.

Emma, on Time Bandits: “I still haven’t decided how I feel about the ending. I need to write that fanfic.”
Me: “I’m already writing that fanfic.”
Emma: “Why haven’t you finished yet?”

I’m thinking SuperBowl is prime time to work on fic ‘cause i clearly can’t do homework during it.

"Sometime before 6:30, the game will start. Remember the game, between the Patriots, who could win their third Super Bowl in four years, and the Eagles, who last played (and lost) in the Super Bowl 24 years ago?"
-Richard Sandomir, on the excess of pre-game programming

Oh, look, young Ian McKellan and Judi Dench from my MAT class copy of Macbeth.

David Lenson, my UMass Comp-Lit Brave New Worlds prof, mentioned during the Maria Tatar radio interview that one of his students wanted to do a senior honors thesis on fanfiction, and from his tone it sounded like he denied said student. I e-mailed him and mentioned Susan Cocalis, my UMass Grimms to Disney prof, in my e-mail. This is the response i got:
I'd never deny a student the opportunity to do new research! C'mon! I think the project may be a bit bogged down at the moment, but her name is [name removed] and she's in my current class. I'll see if it's ok with her to give out her email address.

I invited Susan Cocalis to join us on the show, but she had a prior commitment. Tatar, Cocalis and I are old pals from graduate school.

And [livejournal.com profile] wisdomeagle wrote me fic for [livejournal.com profile] buffyverse1000! I have love.

I caved and signed up for the Ethan Rayne ficathon.

I am not, however, doing the Multifandom One Ring Fic Challenge, obviously.

I’m excited about my [livejournal.com profile] femslash05 assignment.

Emma, i thought of you.

I have the “Normal Again” outtake [JM/NB kiss] vid clip again! ::loves [livejournal.com profile] mpoetess::

There is an Angelus prayer. Yeah, it’s named for the Latin beginning, but still; being in fandom makes one’s brain extra-confused. (Hat-tip, [livejournal.com profile] maechi.)

Yeah, i have a bad habit of tilting my head when i'm photographed (no idea why) but whatever. It's just college yearbook. I would like nicer pics of my cute haircut, for personal posterity, but that can happen over break. For now, this is the photo i sent to the yearbook, edited roughly for LJ.

Thanks, Kate. )

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] hedy for taking the pictures. I know they're not the greatest, so anyone who wants to help me figure out how to fix them in a program i have (or can easily download) or who wants to try with her own camera, go for it. Until then, you can check out the current ones here )
