Today I kept sort of forgetting that I'm leaving *tomorrow.*
I went to 12:10 Eucharist at SSJE with ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
sk8eeyore (Sarah) and marketsquare (Chris) today. (Who knew there was a monastery/chapel on Mem. Drive next to JFK Park? Not me.)
There were other lay people present, which surprised me, though I guess it shouldn't have.
The crossing and bowing and etc. continue to wig me. Even (especially) when it's directed at the Bible.
As at Grace's funeral mass, they did the "reading from the book of [x]" which so annoys me. It feels like, "No, it's not important for you to be able to read this on your own and interpret it yourselves."
The readings were from Exodus (Moses' face shining -- Exodus 34:29-35) and Matthew (the pearl of great price and the other similar story -- Matthew 13:44-46).
I wanna dork out about the Moses story, and talk about how I hate the story of the pearl of great price story (though I get what it's getting at), but I am tired yo.
The sermon was focused on the Matthew passage: the reign of God is not obvious. "Pay attention. For the reign of God is at hand."
3 minutes! Seriously, I timed it.
The service didn't quite follow the order in the bulletin, which bothered me.
They did the Collect for Purity, which I liked, but I felt like they skipped the unison Prayer of Confession.
Clearly I have spent enough time in progressive churches, because I squicked at calling God "he" in "Proclaim the greatness of the Lord, he is the Holy One."
They chanted Psalm 99, which was kinda nice.
I really liked hymn #615 in the 1982 Hymnal (what is up with the lack of titles?). It opens with "Thy kingdom come" and has a line about God being present in the darkness as well and some turn of phrase about the strength of the stars.
As at Grace's mass, the Communion elements were "gifts," though I still don't quite understand how that works. It starts with them being gifts to God, which makes no sense to me since we're the ones eating it, and then by the time the Communion prep talking is over, it's become language of them being gifts from God to us (which makes far more sense).
I had originally been thinking about maybe abstaining since I felt like they would probably think I shouldn't be taking Communion from them (since it doesn't really mean to me what it means to them), but we all went up and circled the altar and sang/chanted a whole bunch during all the prep, so I just stayed there.
They tear the bread in advance, and it's a communal cup (well, two, technically). I think the only time I've had communal cup. I've gotten used to CWM's intinction if we're gonna do literal bread and cup. The words of receiving were "The Body of Christ, the Bread of Heaven" and "The Blood of Christ, the Cup of Salvation." I liked that. Also, tasty.
There was a line I liked about unity, constancy, and peace(?) -- in the Benediction, maybe?
As we walked out, Chris handed one of the priests(?) a copy of a Harry Potter book. Hee :)
I invited them back to Spangler for lunch and felt bad that I then abandoned them to go back to my desk (having already essentially taken my lunch hour).
Chris: "How do you two know each other?"
Sarah: "From LiveJournal, I guess."
Chris: "Oh, the old-fashioned way."
Heart like whoa! So much better than last time when we (and Ari) tried to explain LiveJournal to Jan :)

I learned that Labor Day weekend (well, Friday-Sunday) is:
Liberating Love, Celebrating Hope!
The National More Light Presbyterians Conference
Atlanta, GA. - August 31-September 2, 2007
I'm tempted (would be moreso if they actually had a schedule up). I would feel really weird taking Friday off the week I get back, though. Maybe next year? (Not that I don't have enough travel plans for next year already. If Convo turns out to be awesome, it had better not conflict with WriterCon next year.)

They now have tags on the machines in the gym explaining that you can plug your headphones into the thingies they attached to the machines and switch between the half a dozen channels (each tv is on a different channel, so switching it on your machine switches which one your headphones tune to).
