I was looking at the X-3 gallery with Eric today. Famke Janssen remains v. pretty. Eric agreed that she was pretty and said that he hadn't previously thought so -- which, okay, whatever. Also: mmm, Callisto. (Though labrets are ew.) Eric said she's supposed to have an eyepatch. And also that she looks like a butch lesbian, but that he thinks she's supposed to be a lesbian so it's okay.

I Googled her and lo, BtVS connection.

Caridad - A girl from the Philippines to whom Xander is attracted; first seen in "Dirty Girls". She too survives the climatic Hellmouth battle according to the Buffy magazine. Caridad is portrayed by Dania Ramirez.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callisto_(comics)
Dania Ramirez portrays her in the third X-Men movie. She is a member of Magneto's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. In place of an eye-patch and physical disfigurement, this version of Callisto is beautiful, yet heavily tattooed. Her powers have also been altered to move at incredible speeds and the ability to "sense" other mutants around her, and assess their abilities and power level.

P.S. X-Men has Reavers?

Well, Joss *is* an X-fan (and writer, now). And the term's been around a long time to describe scary people who plunder and pillage.

props to the icon usage

I remember after the movie, talk about the archaic term "reave" going around the 'Net, but it's not a term I'm very familiar with.

The fact that he's an X-fan makes it weirder to me, 'cause then the term already means something to him and he's reinventing it to mean something diferent (albeit similar).

Well, I think the term is evocative of an earlier time, and also of the word revenant, so it fits with the universe he was creating.

Maybe he didn't like that arc of X-Men, or probably, he didn't really care. *g*

And yes, it's my "uh oh" icon.

Callisto isn't (unfortunately) a lesbian. She had a thing with Forge (which was kinda cool) also abducted Angel entirely for the pretty. I am so weirded at them making her beautiful. (because damnit. good looks are *not* part of the X-gene. Make me miss Sarah. (Marrow. Grew Bones. not pretty. was part of the point. But then they made *her* pretty too. Sigh)

Yeah, reading about the beautification of her I was thinking of you and your love for Marrow. I get that Hollywood movies are all about the pretty people, but still. Did I ever link you to this post (http://community.livejournal.com/fanficrants/2557153.html) about creating mutants who have powers that aren't supercool? Oh, and one of the FilmFest showings was Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema (kind of picking up where Celluloid Closet left off and talking about [American] movies that were intentionally queer) and near the end they asked assorted queer actors etc. about what they want to see in gay cinema to come and Alan Cumming said he'd like to see a film in which the main couple aren't all shaved chest men who work in PR etc. but where one is a little overweight for example. This, in turn makes my brain think of a post I saw once where someone was complaining about fanficcers turning Giles all washboardchest etc. instead of letting him be a normally bodied (and yes still v. attractive) middle-aged man.

Forget creating mutants. Some of them are canon in X-men. God, there's this one poor boy in a (somewhat) recent comic (read: just a couple years ago) who was killing everyone around him unintentionally, he gave off some kind of acid. Wolvie had to *kill* him. Some of the morlocks really just *look* weird. A lot of them don't have powers and have just *made* themselves, batmanlike. And actually, same universe as the deathkid there was a scene with Angel whining to Storm because yeah, wings, pretty, but he sorta lacked useful/hardass powers.(grandted, the flight does come in handy in their fights but he didn't know that yet).
And there's always maggott. Has huge maggotts in his stomache. They come out and *eat* things for him. Useful, possibly but ewwwww gross.

Yeah. It's actually one of the reasons I like Stargate Atlantis. Rodney is *cushy*, and though some of the ficcers make him all hardass it's less so than in Buffy. Mostly they just make John love him for it. (Cause- pillow-esque!)Actually, unlike Giles (and Grissom, come to think of it) Rodney's not that understandably handsome, and that gets considered a lot. it's cool.
There is actually some movie out there like that. (I don't remember/haven't seen it. It's on a list...and it took me *way* to long to find for it being the first movie on the list: http://www.skeeter63.org/~k9kennel/Alive_And_Kicking.htm Hm. well, ok. is one out of two. Here: this? Is my favorite list ever: (ok so not favorite *ever* but I found it useful, especially back when I was starting in on movies) http://www.skeeter63.org/~k9kennel/Recs_page.htm )

Just wanted to chime in with a brief "word" . . . nothing to see here. :)

Meh, I didn't think Famke was particularly pretty in the first two movies. Not ugly, just very much not to my tastes, and I wasn't pleased with her portrayal of Jean at first (though she did grow on me in X2).

I don't care now, though. It's Phoenix, and from the previews, she's looking good, both physically and in terms of characterization.

I'm also weirded out by the prettification of Callisto (though not surprised; it's Hollywood). I'm somewhat attached to the original character, with her flaws . . . and her connection to Storm. (No, she's not officially a lesbian, but many many of the X-women are hinted to have bisexual leanings, particularly when they've been written by Chris Claremont. There were some amusing "closet" jokes towards the end of X-Treme X-Men; maybe I'll dig them out later.) However, I'll readily agree that this incarnation is seriously hot.

Since I found out that Joss is a longtime X-Men fan, certain references and influences have made a good bit more sense to me. "Reavers" included, though I definitely like Joss' version better. (This isn't always the case; if Buffy was in fact inspired in part by Kitty Pryde, well. I vastly prefer Kitty.)

You with your Thing for redheads? ;) I don't think I was esp. struck by her in the earlier movies (was all about Rogue/Anna Paquin for me) but Eric seemed almost to be implying that she was unattractive in the previous movies -- and partly this is just him, who's always being (without malicious intent) a jerk about something or other.

I know basically nothing about Kitty Pryde, but I think Joss just has a Thing for tiny girls kicking ass.

Well, sure, I liked her hair, but meh. The way she holds herself, the shape of her face . . . doesn't do it for me. The long Phoenix hair helps some.

I also tend to prefer women who are more . . . cute, and petite, I guess. There are notable exceptions, but . . . oh, this is just beyond my powers of explanation. :p I think I was more bugged by the movie-Jean personality than anything else, anyway. It wasn't my preferred interpretation of the character.

*shrug* I just remember hearing, when he started on Astonishing X-Men, that Kitty was part of the inspiration for Buffy. You're right, he does have a Thing there. On the other hand, one of the fascinating things about Kitty--which he's been exploiting in his comics--is that while she definitely kicks ass, it's not her first, natural impulse. She's a nerdy little genius, and she's going to grow up to be a politician with all kinds of peacemaker leanings. ^^ (I'm afraid in this movie she's just going to be the little cute girl, but I'm still excited about her.)

Huh. I'm not sure I would have guessed that.

Yeah, that's what I figured.

Oh that does sound really intriguing. (Has the potential to be written v. poorly, but then doesn't everything?)

Jean's hair

Though I guess I should call her Phoenix now.

First movie: thought Jean was very pretty, but Rogue was still my favorite.

Second movie: Whoa! Jean is HAWT! I love what they've done with her hair (I like Storm's shorter 'do as well).

Third movie: WTF?! What'd they do to Jean's hair? It's all thin and limp looking. Oh the utter sadness (Again, like Storm's hair though).

I don't know, for me it's much more about features than anything else. Jean's hair short means it frames that incredible bone structure which, to me = very, very pretty. Jean with long, limp-looking hair (especially paired with red vinyl skin to match) = teh yuck.

And, as I'm not really familiar with the comics and their story arcs, I'm not as attached to "well, this is how the character is supposed to look" types of things (Let's face it, Storm's long, very white, obviously a wig style from the first movie? So not attractive, even if it was canon. Storm's black and white, touched by electricity hairstyle as appears in X3 trailers? Excellent).

It is Joss's mythology. We just live for it. You didn't get the memo?
