Date: 2006-03-13 03:44 am (UTC)I often think there should be some sort of Users Guide for newbies -- explaining the assorted features, how different things work, etc. I mean, there's the FAQ, but there's a lot of stuff that people just don't think to ask 'cause they don't know it exists. (And then of course there's the frustration that lots of people -- not you, I'm sure -- don't even bother looking at the FAQ. *stabs people who post in communities saying stuff like "I don't know how to do that thing where you hide part of your post, so um, here's my fic.")

Date: 2006-03-14 02:48 pm (UTC)Well, yeah. I certainly never attempted to read it full through, I just searched through when I was seeking a particular piece of information.
if I see someone doing something I want to do or know how to do, I tend to ask them how they did it
That definitely makes sense. It's the stuff like posting fic uncut in communities 'cause you can't be bothered to check the FAQ or e-mail the mod or anything that drives me up a wall.
I also ask a salesperson where something is in a store if I don't know rather than looking myself, generally, though. Drives my husband crazy. He'd rather look around himself first and ask as a last resort.
I'm very self-sufficient, independent, Yankee grit, etc., but it really depends on the situation. A lot of times I just don't wanna bother people, and I tend to think I'll remember better if I do it myself. I try to be good about asking before I've reached the "ready to give up and cry" point, though. I'm not all that bothered by other people asking for help, though, as I am after all ultimately concerned with actually getting the product/information/whatever.
