Fri: I did 45min @ 4.0mph and 1.0 incline on the treadmill. (It really is so much easier when you have something distracting you -- e.g., interesting stuff on the tvs.)

Someone on SquawkBox this morning [John ... Ryding of RDQ] guessed 7000 as a bottom for the DOW and said, "We can only have 12 more days like yesterday and then the DOW's at 0." (Yesterday, Prof.D. asked me, "How low do you think the stock market's gonna go before it bounce back? 8000? I'm waiting for your answer so I know when to buy.") [video]
Bob Barbera of ITG said we did learn the lesson of the 1930s, that you don't let the system go -- and later down the road we'll have to remind ourselves that we should have learned the lessons of the 1920s: you don't let things get as far as they got. [video]

John Gutfreund (former Salomon Brothers CEO): "It doesn't speak well for the management -- talking about the government regulators. I think they've done an abominable job."
Becky Quick: "Is it that they've done an abominable job, or how can you possibly come up with a holistic approach when you're trying to put out fires as they come up and fighting with Congress at the same time?"
Bob Barbera: "You are running up against ideology. If you are desperate to believe that the system works itself out, that the private sector can do it, then you are always tentative and trying to be small and ad hoc."
This idea that we're supposed to give up our ideologies and focus on finding a solution is something that instinctively I support, but what he actually says ... I think, "But your assumptions about how things work affect your opinions as to what tools will help." (I was reminded of positive vs. normative statements -- p.28+ of Mankiw.)
Gutfreund, later: "I think they should be muzzling the President. Because I don't think platitudes are particularly in order at this moment."
Bob Barbera (deadpanning in reply to Jack Bouroudjian): "You're saying that the Democrats were too slow to intervene in the markets, that was the problem?" [video]

A GMA anchor said Warren Buffet has surpassed Bill Gates as the richest man in the world. First time in 15 years Gates hasn't been at the top. She cracked, "I guess it's a good thing someone's been making money this past month."

I've watched Pink's new single "So What" [lyrics, video] on VH1 a couple times and am not really a fan. I do really like Matt Nathanson's "Come On Get Higher" [lyrics, video] and Gavin Rosdale's "Love Remains the Same" [lyrics, video]

Speaking of tv, MaryAlice said the HBS turkey was on WBZ last night. Katie told me some about the segment later, and we agreed that it was pretty lame. Excerpt

I don't actually know what kind of cake we ordered for Greg's party 'cause Ben took care of everything, but it was YUM. Looking at the menu [PDF], I'm thinking the Chocolate Symphony? -- "Three tiers of Valrhona chocolate mousse (bittersweet, milk, and white) with chocolate cake"
We also had the two bottles of wine that Peter had given Greg over years past and which Greg had been saving for a special occasion. He poured us all a little bit of this Wisconsin Cranberry Wine (he'd even chilled both bottles in his mini-fridge that morning), and then while I was talking to Sara and Nithya, whatever was left of that as well as most of the second bottle got drunk. Various people had elsewheres to be, so when I turned around 25 minutes after the "party" had started, the hall was almost empty.

Meme I've seen around: When you see this, post in your own journal with your favorite quote from The Princess Bride. Preferably not "As you wish" or the Inigo Montoya speech.
Possibly my favorite line is, "Is this a kissing book?" but the one I've been thinking about recently is:
That day, she was amazed to discover that when he was saying "As you wish", what he meant was, "I love you." And even more amazing was the day she realized she truly loved him back.
