hermionesviolin: (writercon)
This should have been posted earlier, but I finally got IRC to work um, ~3 hours ago now; wow (thanks to [livejournal.com profile] harmonyfb for getting me to the right channel), so I got distracted with WriterCon.  P.S. [livejournal.com profile] chrisjournal=awesome.  "Chances are that you will run into someone who will say "just crash on my floor" in order to continue the conversation ;-)  I will check with HI and see if they will shuttle in the wee hours, too.  If not, we'll get a cab company alerted."  And upon hearing my LJ name, cissasghostSonya said, "Oh, you're Hermionesviolin - on LJ?  Did you do a post that was a collection of all known Inara/Kaylee fic?"  I am not used to being famous.  (Though I could get used to it ;) )  With speakingsilenceElizaShaw around, I may have to change my IRC nick.  This ES1/2 thing is confusing.  HV is much more distinctive (though, er, now I look like an STD).  Plus, apparently IRC has a character limit, so I'm "ElizabethScriptur" which is kinda weird.

Chat can be difficult with multiple people typing in real time (and it doesn't have the AIM feature where you can "see" that someone is typing and thus take a pause yourself.)  But it is a really good way to get a feel for a few individuals at a time.  I foresee friending frenzies.  (Though, PSA: I post copiously and will be in no way offended if you don't friend me.  And please don't be offended if I don't friend _you_.  Though always feel free to comment on my LJ.)

Oh and I chatted one-on-one with [livejournal.com profile] agilebrit after everyone else had gone to bed.

/name-checking

It was a good day even before that.

Mary Alice complimented me on my shirt (the red one with the flowers along the collar).  She noted that it was more casual than what I usually wear, and I explained that I need to do laundry.  We were all in agreement that it was appropriate for work (esp. during the summer) though.  (I wouldn't have worn it otherwise.)

UnitHead's up in Maine but called and said he's up there working: "Don't think of me as being on vacation; think of me as being at work 300 miles away."

Prof.B., on the other hand, is on a "remote island off the coast of Maine" with his family, says he has to go to the library for Internet and hasn't done so yet, that he called and asked their hours and got the response:  "I think, Tuesday through Thursday;" v. lowkey.  So phone is the way to reach him.  The media called, and when I talked to him he said,  "I think you handled that just right," which made me happy.

I e-mailed J&B to let them know I'd be taking time off.  J e-mailed me back: "Great, you deserve it! Just let me know if you need a temp.  :)"  Cute.

The weather was _so_ much better than yesterday (Tuesday).  Cooler and drier.

After work I went to CVS, FoodMaster, and the laundromat; it was after 8pm when I finally got to make dinner.  But I now have clean clothes (and I will soon have an iron and an ironing board), and toiletpaper, and yellow bananas! (the apples weren't so good, but I managed to find what look like fairly good ones, so hopefully it's a fair trade)... and lots of other stuff.

Having a party in my apartment before my actual housewarming feels weird ('cause it's like the housewarming is supposed to introduce people to your new abode), but I miss people (even though it's looking like only 4 people will be in attendance).

[livejournal.com profile] jennyo talked about the fannish breakdown of Fireworks, and BSC is #8 in the top 10 -- 3/7 of which were mine.  ::dances::  The masterlist is here; so weird to see my name so many times.

[Also: the ficpost hit 8 pages of comments -- double the number of pages of prompts.]

And there is talk of a g-rated battle upcoming.  ::is excited::  like FemGen, only with less stress!

My dad e-mailed me:

Okay, Shatner is absolutely crazy, but sometimes he's kind of awesome, as evidenced here.

My birthday is this Sunday (July 9). Come for a lazy hangout at my apartment that afternoon. (And pray for decent weather -- by which we mean low humidity, as I have no ac. ::watches everyone suddenly make other plans::)
Layna, can you bring Apples to Apples?
Everyone is free to bring board games, other people, etc.
I'll be making fruit salad and getting chips+guac on Saturday. Suggestions/offerings of other edibles welcome.
Let me know if you need directions (or, ya know, just an address ;) ).
Please let me know if you're driving. We have a driveway, but it's not _that_ big, so if you could come by T that would be great. (There's probably a bus from Alewife, is definitely one from Davis -- or you can walk from Davis.)

Who's doing tonight's WriterCon chat?

(P.S. Sharon, this answers y/our capslock question ;) )

Yay for updated schedule of events (complete with descriptions). Yes I am a huge planner ahead.

I am telling myself I don't need to do a dry run of Silver Line to Logan.

Word Length Range: 224-717

I, for one, am very impressed. When's the last time I wrote 3thousand words of _anything_ (ficwise)?

And I wrote pairings I'd never thought of (and wrote them well) as well as pairings I already liked. And I don't think I did much of telling the same story just with different names.

Fics will be posted (backdated) to the ficjournal at some point, and up on the website for next month's update.
hermionesviolin: 3 saguaro cacti silhouetted against an orange sunset, with the yellow sun setting behind one of them (summer)
I fell asleep the first time I went to bed last night (c. 2:15).  And I woke up at a civil hour (c. 8:30).  (Which gives one so much more time in one's day off.)

I'm having my period.  Plus I think the humidity is higher than it has been.  I was v. glad to spend time in the ac-ed Galleria.  (Which, btw, not intuitive from Lechmere.  But a whole passel of people got off so I followed them, and my trust was not misplaced.)

I got some shirts at Sears.  I was so tired of trying on clothes, though, that then I just got lunch and sat outside in the light rain and read while my tummy settled.  (Sakiko Japan, Vegetarian D'lite -- $3.09 + 0.45 for fried rice... v. filling, though it tasted like there was peanut sauce which I thought they should have warned for.)

It was more sunny humid when I came back to my apartment.  Le sigh. So glad to be going back to work in the ac.

I was totally gonna do laundry now that I'd done all my long weekend shopping, but it was closed* :(  I disapprove.
*As was most everything else.  Broadway was so much quieter than usual.

I seem to have acquired a whole lot of errands to do... after 4 days of doing stuff.  Does that seem right to you?

I wrote my last Fireworks ficlet:
+ HP, Hermione/McGonagall, 498 words [8:34pm]

Oh!  In the ladies room at South Station around noon, guess who I saw?  The girl from the Franklin GSA!  (Whose name totally escapes me, unfortunately.  And here I was sure I'd LJed it.  Jamie?)  She said her friends were waiting for her to go to the Hatch Shell, so she couldn't stay, but we did the mutual "good to see you" thing.

I'm really not big on societally obligated days of thinking/feeling anything (also known as: holidays) and obviously patriotic stuff is even more complicated.  But in the interest of getting some air, I went to see the fireworks tonight.  I haven't been in years -- since really it makes much more sense to watch them on tv.  I had a good view, and while the fireworks didn't blow me away, I was reminded of how much I enjoy fireworks.  Like, they just make me happy.

Expandthe longer writeup )

Ari recced John McCutcheon's "Our Flag Was Still There" (scroll down here for .mp3).

My mom e-mailed me:
On this weekend's July 4th episode of Praire Home Companion, they did poetry reading, and Meryl Streep read "What I learned from my mother." I love that poem, and it always brings me to tears.

[...]

I was proud to hear this poem that I thought was obscure read by Meryl Streep, Famous Person (who was quite lovely on the show).
She quoted part of the poem in her e-mail and bolded the part that goes "and once you know how to do this, you can never refuse."  I don't think the power of that line ever really hit me the previous times I've read the poem.  One could talk religious or political and even weave in post-"Chosen", but I'm just going to let the poem be.

weather.com says it's 73F with 87% humidity.
hermionesviolin: 3 saguaro cacti silhouetted against an orange sunset, with the yellow sun setting behind one of them (summer)
+ BSC, Claudia/Stacey, 413 words [9:54pm]
+ HP, Luna/Fleur, 380 words [12:42am]

Why am I the most pleased with the fics I write for pairings I had never considered before?  (Though okay, my pride in the Luna/Fleur is mostly in how easily I made it work.  And I am v. pleased with my WaT ficlets -- a pairing which I wanted to write ever since that scene in E.D.'s first episode.)

Yeah, I am le boring.  I'm gonna go back to work and be asked "What did you do with your weekend?" and answer, "Write porn.  And go shopping.  Uh, and we showed the apartment."  (Whether I actually say this depends on who's asking.)  In fairness, I'm waiting on LJing more about WriterCon and my birthday (this upcoming Sunday afternoon, be there people) until Wednesday when people will be around more.

I should go to the fireworks tomorrow (er, today -- the 4th anyway) since I'm in the city and all.
Concert and Fireworks Times

     Monday, July 3rd:

     Tuesday, July 4th:
The concert takes place from 8:30 PM to 10:30 PM, followed by a 23-minute fireworks show.

hermionesviolin: (hipster me)
Am I acclimating to the heat?  'Cause I was comfortable in my apartment this afternoon.  (weather.com said stuff like 85F, feels like 87)  However, I felt really I should (a) spend some time out of the house and (b) do some errands, though.

I found a couple work-appropriate shirts at Marshalls that I was willing to wear.  So that was of the good.  I really need more warm weather shirts for work but don't want cap-sleeve or sleeveless, so that cuts down my options like whoa.  (I also really don't want hand-wash 'cause the bathroom sink here is crap for that.  I'm still figuring out how I'm gonna handwash the stuff I already have.)  Though work is often cool enough to merit a cardigan over short sleeves, so perhaps I should consider sleeveless+cardigan as an option.

Sidenote: OtherRoomie's cat is crazy.  These past few days he's been much more in your face so to speak about wanting to be with people, and I woke up twice this morning (around 4:30am and around 7:00am) to hear him outside my door. I had gone to bed around 2am, so I was not thrilled. (I did manage to get about 10 hours of sleep, though.)  Tonight he twice put his paws up on my lap while I was at the computer and then jumped up on the computer desk.  (At that point I took him out of the room and closed the door.)

Have written one more froplay Fireworks:
+ WaT, Sam/Elena, 493 words [10:29pm]
And I finally got feedback on my other WaT ficlet, which makes me so happy.

I'm actually rather enjoying this "write for prompts" things -- which is so weird because I keep saying that's not what I want to do at all and I find it stressful &etc.
hermionesviolin: photo shoot image of Summer Glau (who played River Tam) with text "we are all made of stars" (no one can stop us now)
Friday I did lots of walking around and the air was nice at night, so there would be no good reason for me to not be able to fall asleep.  Eric was saying at work that day that he hadn't been able to sleep all week, that he'd even taken a sleeping pill the previous night and hadn't been able to sleep.  The insomnia is catching.  Hello, 100 Years of Soliitude.

And "www.athenewriter.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." so I couldn't update my recs pages.  (Is updated now, though.)

But, um, someone had contributed Sam/Elena Without a Trace prompts to the [livejournal.com profile] femslash_today comment pr0n battle, so... yeah.  [717 words; posted at 3:33am]

I woke up around 9:50am and it was actually quite pleasant, so I put off my errands until tomorrow.  (I had expected the temperatures to be much worse and to need to maximize the time I spent in air-conditioning.)  And wrote more froplay f/f comment pr0n.  (Though I seem to be having more plot than pr0n -- which makes me a bit sad given this specific challenge, though on the whole it's an improvement from my past with ficathons when I often felt like I was having an easier time writing the pr0n than I was the plot to get them there.)

The fact that I am suddenly so prompt-inspired is extra funny 'cause I've been all swearing off ficathons 'cause I'm not in a space of wanting to do other people's requests.  So far I've written:

+ WaT, Sam Spade/Elena Delgado, 717 words [3:33am]
+ BSC, Mary Anne/Janine, 507 words [3:25pm]
+ HP, McGonagall/Luna/Hermione, 308 words [8:59pm]
Edit: + BSC, Stacey/Charlotte, 224 words [1:40am] ([livejournal.com profile] sineala, I swear I'd started this fic before we had our conversation about shampoo and fanon.) /edit

I'm actually rather proud of all of them, which pleases me.

(Insta!rec: Firefly, River/Kaylee, guns. by [livejournal.com profile] mosca)

I did go to this in the evening.  Didn't spend my whole day inside.  Eh.  The hair and the jacket reminded me of Mo.  I liked "Final Breath," "Remember Cedric Diggory," and "Maybe Tomorrow."  In part (but only in part) a function of my preference for mellower songs whose lyrics I can discern.  (Sidenote: website says there's a song called "The Ballad of Neville and Luna."  Now that I would pay for.)
Beforehand, I browsed the Cultural Studies section of the bookstore.  Mmm.  (gay) sex and monsters (I saw The Werewolf Complex but didn't see anything vampiric).  Interesting-looking books included:
+ Why The Novel Matters
+ The Modernist Madonna: Semiotics of the Maternal Metaphor (Ari, one chapter is: "Little Women: A Study in adolescence and alter egos")
+ What Else But Love?: The Ordeal of Race in Faulkner and Morrison
+ Sappho and the Virgin Mary: Same-Sex Love and the English Literary Imagination [an amazon search for the main title also gets me Mary Magdalene books]
+ The Virgin Text
+ Victorian Literature and the Anorexic Body
+ Serpents in the Garden: Liaisons with Culture & Sex
+ Metamorphoses of Helen: Authority, Difference, and the Epic

In other news, I think I might be a little bit sunburned.  Which seems weird to me since I'm not outside all that much.  Though I guess I'm out walking 30+ minutes each way for my commute, so that's over an hour each day.  And on Friday we ate lunch outside (dunno how much protection the table umbrella offers) and I walked to Teele and back (~15 minutes each way).

Thoughts on sleep tonight? ;)
