Talking with Joe...

me: people keep asking when I'm going to take some vacation time and go away some where and I don't really have any ideas on that front at all.
him: haha
him: you should, though
him: vacations are good

In our conversation, I mentioned how everyone I know is working so even my usual plan of visiting people doesn't so much work.  It occurred to me that if I'd known there'd be all this pressure to take vacation time (and go away somewhere to boot) I should have made plans to go to [livejournal.com profile] writercon [I have difficulty self-identifying as a writer, so it barely even registered on my radar, being something that people who actually write seriously would go to -- plus, not like I know any of the actual writers in any of my fandoms ... but now I know that at least I'd get to meet [livejournal.com profile] lunabee34].

Does this mean you're thinking about coming to writercon?! 'Cause that would be absolutely fantastic if you could. I'd love to meet you.

I'd sort of assumed it was too late, that this was a "Too bad I didn't know earlier that I'd have vacation time and pressure to take it." Ideal would be taking time off the first two weeks of July when Prof.B. will also be away on a family vacation, but really the summer is slow enough that it wouldn't be a big deal for me to go later in July (when I see WriterCon is) -- and it wouldn't be _right_ after he got back, so I wouldn't be leaving a temp with lots of catchup to pester him about. *ponders* The last idea I had was random traipsing around Europe, and this sounds like a beter idea.

I think the only thing it's too late on is getting the conference rate for staying in the hotel. I think you can still register for the con. I might be wrong, though. The comm for the con is [livejournal.com profile] writercon. I think you'd have a good time. *wheedles* :)

Yeah, I've been poking around the website. Con tickets would be more expensive now than if I'd bought them earlier, but not prohibitively so. It looks like I have up until July 6 to book a hotel room. I'm not sure how useful any of the panels would actually be, though some of them look quite interesting so if the discussion were good they would probably be worth going to (can we tell I've had mixed experiences in the past? :) ). And the whole people interaction thing is probably enough of a selling point to go.

I think that the panels will be fun, but the main attraction for me is getting to meet people. That's really the deal maker for me. Especially since some of my UK friends are coming and I didn't think I'd meet them, well, ever. So that's really cool.

Yeah, I'm not sure I know anyone who's going besides you -- though I supppose I could just glom onto you and get to know your friends.

Yes, yes. Glom away. :)

And though you may not have really talked with anyone much besides me, I think you'll recognize a lot of the names of attendees from reading their fic or meta. Lots of BNFs gonna be there.

Yeah, it sounds like [livejournal.com profile] musesfool is going, which I totally hadn't realized (see, I'm so out of the loop on this) and certainly I expect to recognize a lot of names -- which admittedly could be pretty cool, both in and of itself and because I suspect a lot of them would be great panel participants.

Yeah, this would be the comment I need to retract (http://hermionesviolin.livejournal.com/732320.html?thread=2425760#t2425760).

I just went to the website and you can absolutely still register for the convention!

Oh, and ::facepalm:: looking at the calendar now, it's over a weekend (smart planning on their part) so I wouldn't even be taking all that much time off (rock on!).
