Though hey, it's almost lunchtime. Today's a free EC/RC day -- nobody's teaching; so this morning was the Mid Winter's Brunch (though I say 9-10:30 is still more like breakfast). And my boss is too sick to come in. So yeah, thinking I might be able to catch up on the stuff I wanna post about. (I was amused to see that [livejournal.com profile] musesfool post a list of her own this morning. One thing she mentioned was a "Why did you give that story that title?" thing going around, which intrigues me. I think all of mine are fairly obvious, but feel free to ask. The "Which 5 of your own fics are your favorites and why?" is going around again, and thinking about doing it it was nice to be reminded how much I do like a lot of the stuff I've written -- though part of that is knowing the fullstory in my head even when it didn't all make it into the posted version.)

I really like the titles you have for The Beauty in the Stones, Like Shipwrecks Passing in the Night, (Stars) Kept Marching, and Suddenly, Not So Sleepy. What are the stories behind those?

Thank you.

- The Beauty in the Stones (http://www.athenewriter.com/fic/beautyinthestones.html)
This fic was heavily influenced by a family trip to the Southwest, jokingly referred to as All About The Rocks, and the "beauty" of the title has the double referent of the stones themselves and the characters, who in some ways find each other in that setting.
Every time I see the title I think of Dar Williams' "Mercy of the Fallen (http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3FAZTQE2I923B1NJRAI7KK3FHV)" and "Closer to Me (http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0NS78B4HW4O2C2CXUJ6TOY96HN)," but the title was probably riffing on "The Beauty of the Rain (http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2GITT065WJCMF2900E2U1NQRUX)" (the song which shares its title with the album all of these are on).

- Like Shipwrecks Passing in the Night (http://www.athenewriter.com/fic/shipwrecks.html)
This is riffing on the phrase "ships passing in the night," and Dawn and Spike are both in a bad way, so I really liked the idea of calling them "shipwrecks" rather than "ships."

- (Stars) Kept Marching (http://www.athenewriter.com/fic/marching.html)
This title comes from the song "More For Me (http://s53.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2OJ6FYN6XIWWA028CJ9HO942LT)" by Tegan and Sara, which opens: "had a bad day as bad as they come." The story is a brief look at Xander post-Chosen, having a bad day but pushing on anyway; a lot of the song fits the story of the fic very well.

- Suddenly, Not So Sleepy (http://www.athenewriter.com/fic/notsosleepy.html)
This fic takes place just after the end of "Pangs" and results in sex, and the title felt like something the sexified characters might say, referencing Xander's line from "Pangs": "A bunch of anticipation, a big fight, and now we're all sleepy." Honestly, I don't think the title fits the tone of the story very well.

Glad you think so. And yay for having read them. I wasn't sure if you'd read any of them, so it was kind of weird trying to decide how much of the story I was allowed to spoil in explaining the titles.

I hope you enjoy the songs.
