The first book FLB has written in a while with the characters she created in Dangerous Angels. And MML shelves it with the grownup books rather than YA.

Rereading Dangerous Angels I’d been noticing how it felt set in a sort of unreal past [so much magic realism, no real contact with real life, the only cultural markers dating from decades back], so I was impressed by how grounded in current politics and pop culture this book was.

And FLB continued the progression of thought about meat products and alcohol that I saw in my reread of Dangerous Angels.

And i got to be a bar dork when she mentioned quinine :)

The first girl-on-girl kiss i can recall seeing in an FLB book, and it’s with a mermaid. I thought of [livejournal.com profile] lilithchilde’s mermaid stories.

Also the first time I ever saw mention of a woman having her period or shaving her legs.

There are so many really great lines and passages in this book, but if you’ve read the book you already know them and if you haven’t then I’m smacking you for reading behind a cut-tag.

“Because you already have done something for me, sweetie,” Heaven said. “Congratulations. It only took you—what—about four decades, but still!”
     “What?” Weetzie asked.
And Heaven said, “Why, Weetzie Bat, you’ve grown up, of course.”
