The Inside (1.02) "Old Wounds"

hermionesviolinSo, we were channel surfing, and we hit this blond girl looking at crime scene photos. I think it's some sort of profiler show, but then Adam Baldwin shows up and i realize it's The Inside. So we watch it. (I hadn't, and still haven't, seen the first episode.)
Rebecca is so Fred (Angel) though she first reminded me of River (Firefly).
I read something afterward about Rebecca being the main character, and that surprised me because it felt like an ensemble show (though obviously even on ensemble shows, the focus is often on just a few of the characters) but i don't mind because she intrigues me.
The S&M stuff was problematic. The reminder that the sub is the one with the power to stop the game with a word was a good one. I'd never heard the idea that you go through something painful and come out whole on the other side. S&M is supposed to be about pain that feels good, like an intensified version of lovebites. Though obviously different people do the same things for different reasons. And of course there's the fact that it was the creepy Dom who made that argument; we never got any actual sub's perspective on why she did it, just a bunch of different guys arguing about why the women did it.
I liked that they engaged with the issue and had a variety of perspectives, but i found it problematic that someone unfamiliar with S&M could easily leave that episode thinking S&M was a scary unhealthy thing.
