Complaining that Fuffy sites are never updated, a friend of mine created an auto-archive site. (Oh and speaking of... i heart [livejournal.com profile] doyle_sb4's archive list -- and no it doesn't just link 'ship archives.)

This reminds me that i still want my own domain. I know i posted ages ago asking for recommendations of hosting places, but i didn’t think to bookmark that post, so i’m asking again. I’ve used Angelfire and know enough HTML that i don’t want templates. I don’t really know how this whole hosting thing works, nor do i even particularly know how to go about registering a domain name, so pointers are much appreciated.

How Hosting Works, Generally Speaking

Your host is the place where you keep all your shite. Big corporations have servers that are running 24/7/365(6) so that people can access their sites from outside the company. Smith has them. You and I, and our computers? Can't handle that kind of traffic. Therefore, you need a server that can handle that, and that's where hosting comes in. You set it up so that your domain name routes to said host, and that essentially, said host IS your domain name, as far as anyone can see. It's just not your problem when it comes to taking care of a server.

Be advised, it costs plenty of money to start up...I ended up dropping over $100 three years ago.

I recommend dreamhost.com. Currently the entry level package is $7.95 a month with free domain registration. I have been really pleased with their level of service and general ease of use. If you do sign up with them, say x2rfield refered you or just follow this link. I signed up because [livejournal.com profile] zannah hosts her sites with them/works for them. You sign up, tell them what domain you want and you are in business.
