About what happened at the Undertaker’s match at the Bash last Sunday... OMFG
I’m sorry, i grew up watching WWF and the Undertaker’s the only character still around from the era i watched and they continue to do interesting things with his character and yeah.

Returning to my fandom of choice: *dies* Should i break down and get a PayPal account? Anyone have a PayPal account and wanna buy me all 3 issues? I’d reimburse you of course.

Oh, and if anyone’s interested, [livejournal.com profile] fray_adjacent is a community for posting quotes from Buffy/Angel-verse fanfic.

I’ve still been watching TNG.

Aw, in “Half a Life” (4.22) i actually kinda liked Lwaxana Troi. (Speaking of that episode, my father sent me a link to this story, which talks about the possibility of humans living forever and what that would mean for philosophy. Glenn Reynolds has been blogging about about longevity and aging.)

Bah to “The Host” (4.23).

The shiny toy surprise at the end of “Redemption” (4.26)? And here i had convinced myself i was imagining things in “The Mind’s Eye” (4.25). I heart continuity (5.01).

In the S4 commentary, Marina Sirtis said that in “Qpid,” she and Gates were the only ones who actually knew how to fence but since they were girls they just smashed pots over people’s heads and that they were miffed about that. I was glad to hear that ‘cause i was definitely pissed at that when i watched the episode recently.

[livejournal.com profile] lordaerith and [livejournal.com profile] athene say “Darmok” (TNG 5.02) is one of the best episodes of television ever, right up there with “The Body” (BtVS 5.16). “Darmok and Jalad. At Tanagra. When the walls fell.” I definitely had a distinct memory of that from my childhood but couldn’t remember specifics, though i quickly recalled once i was watching the episode. Given how much the Trek staff has done with creating lifeforms so utterly foreign to ourselves, it was really neat to see them tackle the idea of a language that operated entirely differently from our own. The Enterprise crew seemed rather flagrantly stupid, but maybe that was because i already knew the trick from having seen the episode before.

I have serious issues with 'The Host' too - I think most people do. I wrote a very pissed-off post to that once (in which I repeatedly used the phrase 'oh shut the fuck up, Beverly'. I justify it's existance because in my mind she's so commitment-phobic she'll use any excuse to get out of a relationship. Well, either that or the fact that the female host was kinda weird-looking...It always amuses me that one of our professors (heavy into sci fi and gender, no less) possesses the surname Trill ;)

My first thought at the end of the episode was "You'll fuck the body of someone who's like a brother to you but you won't fuck a girl body?"

I mean, i do understand the human attachment to physical apppearances, but having fucked Odan-in-Riker's body i was like "What, a girl body is the breaking point for you?" I suppose a possible fanwank is that she was reeling from the fact that she really had fucked Riker's body and was nigh ready to break it off with Odan anyway, but it totally wasn't played like that.

I wasn't really into the Odan relationship from the beginning, which is largely what soured the episode for me. Reasonably attractive male arrives and is sweet to you and somehow your 4 years of pent-up sexual tension gets poured out in "Where the Wild Things Are"-esque (BtVS 4.18) nonstop sex? And that whole "I feel entirely free with him" bladdyblah was all tell and no show. I know you're limited in an hour of television, but i would have sacrificed some time watching them get all hot and sweaty to see them interact in a way that made me believe she was really into him. I bought that he was really into her, but except for pent-up sexual frustration i saw no real reason why she would be all over him.

Have you seen S7's 'Sub Rosa' yet? Oh, and The Host is also the episode where we discover Deanna's latent Electra complex - they're discussing romance, and she brings up her father...

I'm at the beginning of S5. Will be sure and post about "Sub Rosa" when i get there, though the fact that you bring it up makes me suspect i'll have post-worthy commentage. I'm big on not being spoiled, so say no more.

Yeah, Crusher's talking about the first guy she loved, the crush on the 11-year-old sportstar when she was 8, and Troi says the first man she loved was her father, and yeah she lists lots of admirable qualities like strength and gentleness, but i was like, "You know that saying that right after what Crusher said when you're talking about romance/sex makes the viewer think incest and hello ew" (and this from a girl who's written incest).

Yeah, seriously.

Though people can be brilliantly obtuse about themselves. Not to mention the awesome power of denial and/or "Well yes, for OTHER people, but not for ME." "The Loss" anybody?

Everyone on that damn show has father issues anyway...I had a theory for a hell of a long time that Picard was Wesley's father. It seems implied in the first season especially, and the first meeting between Beverly, Picard and Wes just screams, 'Hey Jean-Luc, remembe that time with you, me and the sex? Look what we made!' I need to make an icon out of that ;) I found The Loss interesting, actually. Maybe I need to re-watch it and pick holes in it. I remember finding Riker, Beverly and Guinan incredibly patronising. I have this whole fic in my head where she never gets her powers back and leaves the Enterprise after a sympathy fuck with her imzadi. I should write it one day...

Hmm, that's interesting. I felt that in the beginning of the series, Picard seemed to nearly have hate on for Wesley, with his whole antipathy towards children and his protectiveness/possessiveness of his bridge.

Re: "The Loss"...

There were a few moments that felt off, but generally i think people did well.

Crusher was right to point out that if Troi were counselling someone who had lost a sense, she would be telling that person exactly what everyone's been telling Troi. (And Troi herself says as much at the end when she reconciles herself to life without her empathic abilities and makes the parallel to the grieving widow from the B Plot.)

I rather liked Guinan's reverse psychology, showing Troi how she can still manage without her powers.

And Riker loved her deeply and was trying to help.

He admits he feels threated by her empathic abilities...I do think there are some sweet moments, and it's interesting in terms of what it reveals about her relationship - she can't stand to be around him, because he doesn't feel 'real' to her, more so than anyone else because of their imzadi bond.

Oh yeah, i had forgotten about his accusation that she thinks she's better than everyone else.

And it is really interesting the idea that everyone seems flat and unreal since they're missing this depth she has always been able to perceive in them. Though we keep mentioning like every 10th episode that there are some species Betazoids can't read, and we don't see her freaking out about that. Granted those are just random people she happens to encounter rather than an entire shipful of people she is used to being around and being able to sense, but still.

It's the loss of an entire sense...Beverly seemed a little too blase about it, if you ask me. I'd like to see more of Troi thinking she's better than everyone else.

Date: 2004-07-11 10:32 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] hermionesviolin.livejournal.com
Yeah, i can see how Beverly would be seen as being too blase. I think she was trying to be calm and professional since Troi was hysterical and Beverly didn't wanna feed that hysteria. But i'm not about to come to blows over the interpretation or anything.

If I'd just had sex with Riker, I'd never want to have sex again either...Plus, she *really* shouldn't have done that without his consent...it raises some interesting issues to say the least.

From: [identity profile] hermionesviolin.livejournal.com
:P Riker is hot.

But yeah, using someone's body without their consent is very tricky in the consent areas. (Of course, Crusher's brain never seemed to get far beyond "Must. Fuck. Odan. Now." at almost any point during that episode.)

"Darmok"? Yeah, that one was pretty neat. My favorite is still "Measure of a man" (season 2 I believe) although "Tapestry" comes increadibly close (now don't ask me what season that is... but it's Q messing with Picard's mind at its very, very best. And I'm a big Q fan). Your entries are starting to make me seriously nostalgic for decent Trek. Voyager was pretty good for most of its run but since then oh dear.

Yeah, "Measure of a Man" is definitely one of the all time greats. I haven't gotten to "Tapestry" on the DVDs yet, so it must be S5 or later. Q's definitely fabulous.

I watched some of Voyager, though it aired the same time as Orchestra rehearsals, but i definitely haven't touched Enterprise. Quite enjoyed Voyager, though, and look forward to it all being out on DVD so i can watch it full through.

TNG... *ponders reminicently* I think that my absolute favorites were (and no, I can't recall titles, sorry): Anything that involved Prof. Moriarty (although the first episode of this was the better of the two, I think), the JAG episode to determine whether or not Data was property of the Federation, the first episode with Barclay, the episode where most everyone "evolved" into a rather monstrous form (I just remember that Spot the cat became Spot the... damn, was it a big lizardy thing or was it a saber-toothed tiger?), and, my VERY favorite, the episode where Gynen, Picard, and (damn, I'm bad with names tonight) that Bajoran woman become children. The kid who played Picard must have watched Stewart soooooo closely, because his portrayal was amazing. Oh, yes, and Wesley is still hot. *girlish giggle*

In other news... Immortality? No. Have read too much fiction depicting that as a very bad thing (not to mention the conversations with Pastor Dad) to think that this is something to be attained. Don't think it's possible; don't want it to be possible.

the JAG episode to determine whether or not Data was property of the Federation

Yeah, "Measure of a Man." I think that's on like everyone's Best Of lists.

I have memories of the children episode from when i watched TNG as a kid. Haven't hit it on the DVDs yet. [And the Bajoran women is Ro Laren. I just recently watched the episode in which she gets introduced.]

The first Moriarty episode was well done. I have only the vaguest of memories of the episode in which he returns -- haven't hit it on the DVDs yet.

The stuff they do with Barclay is interesting, but i never particularly cottoned to him -- though the holodeck stuff he invents in that first episode is pretty fun.

*nods* "Measure of a Man" deserves to be on practically everyone's Best Of lists. It's excellent.

The childen episode is wonderful. The kids they got to play Ro Laren and Gynen were very good, but the boy who played Picard was just absolutely incredible. It's also amusing to see how the Captain who absolutely refused to have children on the bridge of his starship now has to ask them for help in order to save his ship.

Moriarty... I love the actor who plays him, for a start. And the episode when he returns isn't as good as the first, but his cunning is incredible.

I think I liked Barclay because he seemed a lot like me. I tend to spend quite a bit of time in my imaginary world, too.

*giggles* Yeah, that was just a bit over the top, but sometimes Troi can come across that way--especially from a distance.

Hmmmm... odd that I never wondered before if one could have sex with a holodeck character. I mean, they must be real enough since you can sit on the chairs and such. I guess the idea never occured to me. But then, I was pretty innocent and naive when I was watching TNG regularly.

*purrs softly at the idea of sex on the bridge and then wanders off, smiling secretively*
