Have we all been following DorkTower? ‘cause snort-sob.

[livejournal.com profile] trijinx, he was drowning in footwear. [Overanalysts call this a Shanshu reference/pun. Someone not on my friends page had a really good post about how the Shanshu was totally Spike’s and not Angel’s; thanks to [livejournal.com profile] oyceter for reminding me that it was [livejournal.com profile] hecatehatesthat here. [livejournal.com profile] oyceter makes a neat analogy to Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry, btw.]

Can we please dump the Chicago Tribune in a river somewhere for their abominable choice in Buffy one-liners? And “Storyteller” makes a top 5 over any Season 2 episode? WHAT?!

My dad suspects the author exaggerates, but this article is interesting nonetheless.

The Fashionable Dictionary - amusing though depressingly familar

Um, does Anne Lamott want me to hate her? Because the first page accomplishes that (also makes me lose lots of respect for her) and the second page is an incredibly overextended metaphor which i didn’t really like even when it was just a metaphor on the first page.

Hey, I think you might be talking about [livejournal.com profile] hecatehatesthat's post.

Yes! Thank you. (I liked your bit about the Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry analogy, btw.)

Ahhh, so it WAS footwear. I think when we were chatting about it, I said "shoes," which would mean I got the general sense and you got the general sound. Interesting how people remember things. I liked your Cool Whip mistake though.

How could someone connect footwear to shanshu? Is it a sole/soul thing?

Yup, you said "shoes" when we were chatting.

Interesting how people remember things.

Indeed.

I liked your Cool Whip mistake though.

*smiles* Thanks. We could say Freudian things about my unconscious, but we won't. ;)

Oh that's cute. The ones i've been seeing just go "shoe... like the second syllable of Shanshu."

Both the sound of "shoe" and the soul/sole thing are pretty desperate connections to make. Joss likes to be vague, but in a deliberate way. That didn't seem deliberate.

I agree. I think ever since "Restless" people have been primed to make everything mean something.

My dad suspects the author exaggerates, but this article is interesting nonetheless

The abuse of drugs does probably lead to the under utilization of pain medication in the United States because of the pressure of law enforcement on doctors. I have experience this myself with K_'s fight for decent pain management.

I am sure there are people that can "safely" use. There are people who can safely drink in moderation. I am a recovering alcoholic, food addict, nicotine addict. I withdrew from caffeine the other day! (he says slurping on his coffee) I am firmly convinced that there is nothing safe from my becoming addicted to/or abusing.

I know for a fact that I do not trust the judgement of anyone (addict or not) under the influence and want society to control them to the point where I am safe, if it is keeping them off the roads or keeping a crowd under control after the game. Is it a more effective gauranter of my individual rights / societies resources to stop the use of drugs before they are distributed, or for the law to act after something bad has resulted from the recreational use of drugs.

It think the entire idea of controlling drugs is to minimize the risk of adverse reactions to them. And the philosophy of to do no harm to the human body is a good one, and should apply equally to oneself as to one's neighbor. Alcohol and tobacco does quite enough harm to society as it is. (One can study the impact of alcohol on Indian societies.) Why add other drugs to the list when the potential downside is so great and the upside to being a functional recreational user is ... the writer of the article seemed to have missed that particular point.
