Town Forum on Media, Gender & Violence: Sunday, March 9 Featuring the Premiere of Wrestling With Manhood: Boys, Bullying & Battering, a new video by Sut Jhally
The Media Education Foundation (MEF), a Northampton-based national non-profit producer and distributor of progressive educational programs and award-winning videos, will host a community dialogue on issues of gender, homophobia, and violence in the media. The event will be held at the Academy of Music Theater (247 Main Street, Northampton) on Sunday, March 9th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
The forum -- co-sponsored by AFSC of Western MA, Everywoman's Center, Men's Resource Center of Western Massachusetts, Pride Zone, Safe Passage, Smith College Women's Studies Department, and YWCA of Western Massachusetts -- is open to the general public and is handicap accessible, with a suggested donation of $5 at the door to cover the costs of the event.
The afternoon forum will kick off with the premiere of MEF's newest video: Wrestling with Manhood: Boys, Bullying and Battering -- the first educational program to pay attention to the huge popularity of professional wrestling among male youth, addressing wrestling's relationship to real-life violence and probing the social values that sustain wrestling as a powerful cultural force. Richly illustrating their analysis with numerous examples, Sut Jhally and Jackson Katz -- the award-winning creators of the videos Dreamworlds and Tough Guise, respectively -- offer a new way to think about the enduring problems of men's violence against women and bullying in our schools. Viewer Discretion is Strongly Advised: The video contains graphic images of physical and sexual violence
Following the film, a community dialogue will take place, starting with a brief response period from a panel of community members. Panelists include educators, domestic violence advocates & activists. Rev. Andrea Ayvazian, acting facilitator, will then open up the discussion to the general audience to further explore the broader issues of gender, sexuality, violence and media.
