Yes, my dad misread a sign in Hagerstown today [Proverbs 23:22b].
Speaking of church things, apparently the half-time pastor at my grandparents' UU church only preaches on alternate Sundays. I've had people, upon hearing that my evening church has a quarter-time pastor, ask/assume she only preaches one Sunday in four -- and I've always been boggled by that idea, but here I am encountering it in the wild. And there is a certain "effective use of resources" element to it...
I also learned that if it seems like there's a bit of thread sticking out of tights, it's a bad idea to just cut it off, because if they're knit then you end up with a hole in your tights. Oops :/
Good things about today:
- I woke up a bunch of times this morning but didn't feel underslept today.
- The memorial service went well. I was totally detached re: all the stuff that might go wrong, and everything went fine. This service so outside my mother's culture included poetry by Maya Angelou and Walt Whitman, a rendition of Tom Lehrer's "The Elements" and a recording of Paul Robeson singing "All Through the Night," and sing-alongs of "Turn, Turn, Turn" (vv. 1 & 2) and the Marine Core Hymn (vv. 1 & 3).
- I think I ate enough food.
- Back at the house tonight, Barbara K. was complimenting Kathe's hair -- which apparently she perms and not everyone knew it's naturally straight -- which led to my mom talking about how complete strangers will compliment my haircut, and Barbara K. said something about "a straight person's hair," and I knew what she meant, but I said, "I'm not actually a straight person -- though yes, my hair is naturally straight."
[Despite the tag, I'm fairly certain I came out to all that family my first year in college.]
- I helped put together the photo board for the memorial service.
- I helped carry things in and out of multiple cars, I prompted a running of a dishwasher load, I helped repack leftovers from the memorial service.
["anything that you're looking forward to, that means you're facing tomorrow with joy, not trepidation," as Ari says]
- family time in the morning
- finishing my email response to [redacted v.2]
Edit: There was snow this morning. (Only a few inches.)
A problem with joy sadhana as update is that it's challenging to find a way to include notes like, "Uncle Paul -- who's a professional guitarist -- broke his pinky finger." I'm glad all of "my" family were able to come, though it would have been nice to see the extended family (we haven't all been together since the family reunion my mom put together the summer after I graduated college -- so 6.5 years ago; cousin Sean turned 15 last month). There's talk of doing something this summer. Grandma Kathe hopes to be out of the Hagerstown house and moved up to Binghamton by then, though I don't have her optimism.
