CALLUS / Ekev
-Rachel Barenblat
"Cut away, therefore, the thickening about your hearts and stiffen your necks no more."
- Deuteronomy 10:16
But these calluses
are hard-won.
They protect me
from the places
where the world
rubs me raw.
Without my shrug,
my humor, my
insistence that this
too shall pass
I'll feel exposed
my heart pumping
where any stranger
could see me.
Couldn't you ask
for something easy?
Once I open
my locked chest
what if I
just fly apart?
"what if I just fly apart"
The paradox is that when we are completely given to God, that is when we are completely ourselves. It is in God that we find our true self.
Of course, I only know this in glimpses and moments - but a taste is enough to convince me of the truth that is there.
