When I was growing up, it would have felt normal to bring friends to my church (and I think I did that at least once), but now I feel like Christianity is supposed to be something that good liberal intellectuals have grown out of -- and I can't actually pinpoint where I get this idea from, though I choose to blame Smith (despite the fact that I was surrounded by RCFOS etc.). Plus I get uncomfortable identifying as a Christian for all the reasons you know (and there's the added weirdness of explaining that I don't have a denominational affiliation, that I don't actually go to Sunday services at CAUMC, etc.).
