I'm a TNG gal myself, but my dad is a fan of all of the Star Treks (minus, of course, Enterprise, because that wasn't really a Star Trek), so I know--and usually dislike--Kirk.

I suppose that hymns *are* a part of an evolving textual tradition--as are various translations of the Bible--but I also get a bit twitchy when someone wants to edit a work. Hymns aren't that much of a hot-button issue ('cause I'm a bad pastor's daughter and don't really know that many hymns).

I'm fine with inclusivity in general, but I tend to take issue with it when it becomes awkward and/or ridiculous.

"I'm already used to churches printing revised versions of stuff like the Doxology in the programs and having notes saying for people to sing/say whatever they feel most comfortable with."
I'm not sure if it's my musical background or what, but I like it when people all say the same thing in unison situations.
And the part about singing or saying whatever they're most comfortable with *does* make me twitch. Because it opens a door to people who only want to accept the convenient parts of the Bible, not the parts that are difficult or unpleasant. I'm not saying it's an automatic move from hymns/readings to the Bible, but they *are* linked. If there is something that I have problems with, I won't say it. And in some settings I believe that is--or perhaps should be--the only choice a person has: say this if you believe/agree with it, be silent if you do not. I realize that it may read as very narrow minded, and perhaps it is, but that's been my general feeling about it. If you're really uncomfortable, leave. If you want to talk about it, there are always--or at least always should be--folks willing to talk to you after the service.
