I am always and forever a word person and intellectually-oriented, so for me it is All About the sermon. Hymns, prayers, and responsive readings are next in importance. As for communion, I recently told Ari that for me "it's this symbolic thing that mostly functions as a marker of my positing myself as a part of the church community I am with at that moment, and sometimes I want it to be this powerful connection to The Last Supper, but mostly I engage intellectually like whoa and symbolically usually only under that umbrella of intellectual engagement."
The minister did upfront admit that her sermon wasn't really gonna relate to the day's texts -- acknowledging that that isn't usually how things are done.
