I know there's a quote (maybe from G.K. Chesterton?) that when people stop believing in God, they don't believe in nothing. They find something else to believe in--with the implication that it will be just as non-rational (and perhaps less benign, e.g. the major "fighting faith" of the twentieth century, Marxism).
I'd chase it down--and probably pursue it across numerous websites more and more removed from the original--but I'm at my parent's and their internet is a little weird.
