At my parents' house I just soaked them in the bathroom sink with Woolite (or a generic knockoff thereof) and they did indeed get hung to dry on hangers on the outer shower bar (we had a shower w/ tub and curtain, no door).
The problem with this apartment (which never occurred to me until I went do my handwash) is that not only is the sink v. shallow, but when you pull up the thingy to make the drain stay closed it doesn't work. I refuse to use the kitchen sink ('cause I feel like the food residue never _fully_ comes off the drain stopper thingy) so I'm currently considering using a ceramic casserole dish or something.
