hermionesviolin: ((hidden) wisdom)

Rotating out of the Congregational and hitting a few old friends before I move out of town, I went to the Baptist this morning.

The bulletin cover had a lovely picture of a lowhanging branch over water, with the following written:

Whosoever drinketh of the waters that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water...shall be in him a well of water springing up unto everlasting life.
-John 4:14

After the welcome and announcements they do "Expressing God's Love," wherein I shook hands with like half the congregation excluding the choir (it is a small church).

Opening Hymns: Christ Arose (which has that wonderful upbeat rising chorus) & He Lives

Responsive Reading: Take His Peace
Whose idea was it to structure a Responsive Reading so it starts with the congregation?  Bad idea.  It was an okay responsive reading.

Morning Prayer and the Lord's Prayer (debtors)
They write out the Lord's Prayer in the bulletin, and then the Gloria Patri

Unison Reading: John 14:24-30

Choral Selection (during Offertory): Make Me a Channel of Your Peace
Clearly I am growing as a person, because I was not overwhelmed by feelings of "But it's not the Sarah McLachlan tune."

Doxology (written in bulletin) and Prayer of Thanksgiving

What Wondrous Love is This?

The sermon was basically this Three Trees stroy -- which is a valid choice.  And I liked the story a lot.

It Is Well With My Soul
This line hadn't really registered with me before: "My sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross."  It's an interesting tension because while it's a powerful image, it's also this weird conflation of your sin with Jesus, and yes I know Jesus took on the sins of the world (sacrificial scapegoat whatever) but, yeah, weird for me.
