Oops, sorry, I was unclear. The 10th grade book was Ethan Frome. I read A Separate Peace that year, too, and it does have a sad ending, but it was a sad ending that worked for me. I really should reread it 'cause I was underwhelmed by it but it's such a classic and some people I know really love it.
