I like Ethan Frome very much. I find frustrated desire very interesting, and it's interesting to look at along side of books like Chopin's The Awakening. It's also the answer to just about every third question in Literary Trivial Pursuit. LOL
I read The Pearl but don't remember having much feeling about it one way or the other. The Old Man and the Sea, however, I loved. I haven't read it in probably ten years, but I remember really enjoying it.
I loved this story, 'cause it frustrates me that the cultural expectation is that everyone should have children and there isn't always thoughtfulness about the kind of commitment that's required and how that's not right for everybody.
Absolutely. I agree with this statement 100%. There's so much about being a parent (a mom in particular I think) that people just aren't honest about. About how much it sucks at times and about things like loss of idenitity, etc. And awareness seems to be growing on a larger level (like on Oprah or a news story or something) about issues like postpartum depression, but in RL, nobody wants to talk about it or admit to having it. Hardly any of my mom friends would even admit to feeling one iota less than utterly satisfied and glorious about Mommydom which really made me ashamed to share my desire to jump off a bridge with them. LOL
