run writing workshops for pay

Dear Jackie (and any other interested area peoples):

MLK Monday holiday (Jan. 16), 9:30am-1:00pm or thereabouts at my mother's place of employ (near New England Baptist).

Writing workshops for girls 11-14, max of 20 girls per group, each session is 1.5 hours. Pay is $75/session.

My mom pulled me for journal-writing workshops and said,

"Alternatively, do you have any friends who would enjoy this and the money?
Actually, even if you want to do it, friends who can teach writing workshops – maybe drama? Would be MUCH appreciated!"

Wow, what a great program. I did something like that during high school.

The creative writing workshop is really fun. My basic format is to do maybe 10-15 minutes of basic office stretches, then move on to some basics about creative writing, like ways to get started, etc. One of the best things about the workshop format is that I try to address some of the personal issues that can block your voice. For me, I have to remind myself not to make excuses for my writing, like, "Oh, this isn't very good because I'm tired/cranky/etc. Instead of finishing it now, I'll go have a cookie." Instead, I try to say, "I'm tired/whatever, but I'm still going to write as best as I can. Being tired doesn't make me less of a writer."

After going over ideas and getting started, I like to move on to a writing excercise. This can either be a round robin excercise, where each person contributes to a single piece, or an inspiration excercise, where each student has an object they have to write part of a story about. I normally bring in the objects, so I don't know what they'd be.

:) I'm presently visiting my sister's house in WI, so I'm not sure if I can send along my resume today.
