run writing workshops for pay

Dear Jackie (and any other interested area peoples):

MLK Monday holiday (Jan. 16), 9:30am-1:00pm or thereabouts at my mother's place of employ (near New England Baptist).

Writing workshops for girls 11-14, max of 20 girls per group, each session is 1.5 hours. Pay is $75/session.

My mom pulled me for journal-writing workshops and said,

"Alternatively, do you have any friends who would enjoy this and the money?
Actually, even if you want to do it, friends who can teach writing workshops – maybe drama? Would be MUCH appreciated!"

The population of girls is inner city from Boston -- mostly black and Latina. They have not had cushy lives, for the most part. I'm not working tomorrow but Olivenne, the program person, is, and you can email her at ccgp@jbcc.harvard.edu.

heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey

i just tried that email address and got a bounce-back. do you know if they're still looking for workshop leaders?

i'm a writing assistant at simmons. i've got the materials for 2 workshops -- one on basic paper writing and one on evaluating sources. those two are powerpoint based, but can be altered as needed. the other workshop i have done is on create writing.

also, what program is this through?

i'd like to apply to lead a workshop, but if you have enough people but maybe want some materials, i can even send along my powerpoint presentations to you once i'm at my home computer.

I don't get why it bounced back. THe PP workshops sound too high class for us. We look for hands-on kinds of workshops -- the creative writing would be great as a possibility. I think we had someone do something like that once that went over very well. I work at the Judge Baker Children's Center, Media Center. I think you can reach me thru that website. I don't mean to get all paranoid, but as I was going to type my email address in here I thought maybe that wasn't the best idea. JBCC is at www.jbcc.harvard.edu.
We're looking to get the girls to use their voices -- not so much paper writing and formal things. We sponsored an essay contest called "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" and some (but not all) of the girls at the conference will have written for that. If by "creative" you mean "fiction," that would be a great addition to the program.
(I'm trusting Hermione to screen out the serial killers who volunteer :)
And hey, I'm a Simmons grad, so already I like you.
There's information about last year's essay contest at:
http://www.jbcc.harvard.edu/news/jan10.htm
Are you still interested?
I check this site often as I have no life of my own ;)

Wow, what a great program. I did something like that during high school.

The creative writing workshop is really fun. My basic format is to do maybe 10-15 minutes of basic office stretches, then move on to some basics about creative writing, like ways to get started, etc. One of the best things about the workshop format is that I try to address some of the personal issues that can block your voice. For me, I have to remind myself not to make excuses for my writing, like, "Oh, this isn't very good because I'm tired/cranky/etc. Instead of finishing it now, I'll go have a cookie." Instead, I try to say, "I'm tired/whatever, but I'm still going to write as best as I can. Being tired doesn't make me less of a writer."

After going over ideas and getting started, I like to move on to a writing excercise. This can either be a round robin excercise, where each person contributes to a single piece, or an inspiration excercise, where each student has an object they have to write part of a story about. I normally bring in the objects, so I don't know what they'd be.

:) I'm presently visiting my sister's house in WI, so I'm not sure if I can send along my resume today.

Following up on my mom's link, This (http://www.jbcc.harvard.edu./programs/girls.htm) is the girls' program. Dunno why the e-mail got bounced back. Turns out my mom's e-mail address is misspelled on the media center page (http://www.jbcc.harvard.edu./advocacy/mediacenter.htm). You can delete the final "e" in her name, or we can go the long route and you can e-mail me (hermionesviolin@livejournal) and I can forward/show it to my mom :)

rock. ::emails, replies::

okay, in regards to the other thing re: the adding. i've added you. i won't be back in boston til the 13th due to bizarre family circumstances that would bore me in the retelling. ;) but anyways, may i suggest that we aim to go to the lizzard lounge not the 14th but the 21st?

Yup, "ny" rather than "ney."

The 21st sounds good for Lizzard Lounge.
