At South Station, a guy wearing one of those Saved By Jesus/Lost to Hell billboards we've seen at Govt. Ctr. and Park St. was talking -- amicably, it appeared -- with the Green World/Extinction guy who so often has a table at South Station. I really wanted to engage them in conversation, but my train was gonna be leaving within minutes.
Not necessarily a surprise. Environmentalism is a big part of the religious left (and to an increasing extent, the religious right). You know, God gave us a wonderful world and we screwed it up, that sort of thing.
Of course, if you take the Bible literally, we're supposed to screw it up--"subdue it" and all that. Make it different, more like what works for people. There's an implication to "subdue it" that the earth is not so good and needs to be changed.
But then, Biblical interpretation is like Constitutional law: you read into the document what you want to be there. Because after all, it's a good document and what you want is good, so it must be there. At worst the document would be neutral. It could never REALLY mean what you know is not good.
