Yeah, I definitely think that I love HP because of the huge fanfic potential, not the great quality of the canon story. And that's okay, you know? So many people get all upset about people saying that they are more interested in fandom than in the books, but I don't see anything wrong with people getting out of it whatever they want to get out of it. I'm preaching to the choir on fanfic, here, I know. :)

Possession absolutely bored me to tears and I thought the characters were completely unrealistic. I couldn't finish it, I was so bored.

Also, Ursula LeGuin is all about social experiment thinly disguised as story, which drives me absolutely batty. Nothing wrong with social experiment per se, but I hate it when that sort of thing is diguised as fiction, because it doesn't usually make for a good story. Real life in general doesn't make for a good story, because it doesn't have beginning, middle, end. So a social experiment like The Left Hand of Darkness just did not make me feel anything. Which is, after all, what I'm looking to get out of a story. I want to care about the characters. Alas.

Ursula LeGuin is definitely a sore spot with me, hence the ranting. She is #1 Most Overrated Writer in my mind. Blech.
