This afternoon, a bunch of local fangirls watched the new She-Ra together, and it was indeed an excellent thing to watch in a group -- though we watched the first 6 episodes as a group (they're half-hour episodes) and all agreed we were likely to finish it later today on our own because it's a delight.

None of us had watched this show growing up, and the sum total of what we knew about this new version was basically that it was done by Noelle Stevenson (of Lumberjanes) and we had heard it was actually good, not to mention queer.

People in the room made comparisons to Steven Universe, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Voltron, but I thought of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Regardless, there's lots of good messaging about the importance of working together for the greater good (not isolating yourself and just protecting your own kingdom, but also not relying solely on a hero/someone with special powers), and it turns out it's an all-female writing team, and there are very few male characters (though our core trio does include a boy) and it has a very queer feel to it even though there's very little in the way of textual romantic relationships at all.

Okay, as promised, I have now finished all 13 episodes. Who wants to talk to me about this show?
