I don't love the trend of rebooting shows -- you're then burdening yourself with the inevitable comparisons to the original (and how can a new thing possibly compare to people's nostalgia for something they came to love over time?) plus the feeling that we're just retreading familiar ground instead of making space for new stories.

But I had heard about this reboot mostly from Teen Vogue to be honest, and I was intrigued by the Latinx bent.

I was letting my housemate watch baseball (it's playoffs season) last night, but I watched the pilot tonight and I actually really enjoyed it!

The Internet is apparently very divided. (I went into the Tumbr tags in search of pretties to reblog and was disappointed to find almost entirely textposts, many of which were not happy about the show.)

I will grant that billing it as a Latinx reboot when only one of the actresses is actually Latinx is problematic [link]. But all the stuff about how the show is trying too hard? Whatever. Yes, there are parts that could have been a bit smoother, but overall I was really pleased by its very intentional Going There politically. And the joke about being "woke" suggests to me that the writers are aware of the perils of performative wokeness -- which doesn't guarantee they won't fall into that, but which does reassure me some that there is at least some thoughtfulness present.

Also, someone (this post? relatedly, also this one) pointed out that the trope of a white British dude as a gatekeeper to knowledge is not just tired but actively problematic. See? I'm totally willing to concede some critiques of this show. But I think I mostly only wanna hear critique of it from people who generally love it -- that if you are on the whole not into it, I don't wanna hear that; but if you are doing the thing where you critique what/because you love, then I'm into that, and am happy to have pointed out to me stuff that I might not have flagged on my own.
