[sub/urban life] local independent bookstores

As most people who have encountered me in the last ~2.5yrs know, I've been reading a lot of picture books. #RadicalAunting

I have access to good public library systems, but occasionally there's something I really wanna read that I have to actually purchase -- so I order from my local independent bookstore (or directly from the publisher if they don't have it in their catalog) because I refuse to buy books from Amazon. (I mean, I try not to buy anything from Amazon, but especially books.)

This weekend, my mom mentioned getting something at Barnes & Noble, and I was like, "Oh, you don't have a local independent bookstore, do you?" and she was like, "Yeah, no."

In fairness, I don't have a local independent bookstores in the town in which I live either -- but our option sets are very different.

I looked on IndieBound's Indie Bookstore Finder and...

from my mom's home address:
  • 4.9mi -- which I think only sells stuff by Peter H. Reynolds? (I am confused.)
  • 4.9mi -- which is only children's books/toys
  • 8.7mi -- a full bookstore
from my home address:
  • 1.5mi
  • 1.7mi
  • 1.9mi -- this is the one I actually use, because it's basically on my work commute route and generally convenient to places I'm already going
And then if we try my mom's work address (in the city):
  • 0.8mi -- a children's book shop
  • 1.0mi
  • 1.0mi
  • 1.2mi
  • 1.7mi
  • and on it goes
