Ms. Marvel 1.03 "Destined"
We watched this episode on Friday.
DJINN!
After episode 1,
musesfool had said, re: Kamala's powers, "I would especially like them to tie back to her Pakistani heritage rather than the Inhumans, who are kind of persona non grata with the MCU right now I guess."
My partner joked, "So, the Eternals?" (I have not seen that movie, so I had no opinion.)
So when Najma was saying they've been known by many names, I was prepped for her to say Eternals, and was NOT expecting djinn. (Yes, it was in the Previously On, but I thought that was gonna be about Kamala being afraid of the dark or something.)
today:
musesfool had said, "so was that a Kree they took the bangle off? The arm was blue. Also, is it somehow related to the Ten Rings?" (Sidebar: Because Kamala is a Captain Marvel superfan, a Kree connection feels fitting.)
[I haven't seen Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings -- though Thom has -- but that at least is on my to-watch list as supposedly being fun, so it's definitely higher on my list now.]

Okay, other things about the djinn.
I was not expecting the heel turn of the djinn. Like, I just assumed they had gotten exiled because of meanies, but no, probably more likely because they were meanies. Kamala just found out about all this the night before and it's her brother's wedding! You can't wait literally a day to talk to her more and try to assuage her concerns? Instead you storm her brother's wedding and are gonna kill everyone? (I mean, it's Kamran who says that everyone will die -- but when the djinn show up in attack mode, they definitely look like they would be willing to kill anyone who stood between them and Kamala, and also to use anyone as leverage to get her to do what they want. Sidebar: How do the Damage Control Agents take them in so easily? Did they do some magic trick to neutralize their powers or something?)
I'm def interested to learn more about Najma's comment about how Aisha betrayed them. Does she just mean how Aisha vanished with the bangle instead of sticking around to help the rest of them like she was supposed to? I'm confident she didn't use it to go back herself, so I'm really curious where she is now (since I assume she has the same slow-aging as the rest of them). She had a family at the time of that flashback, right? And Yusuf's telling of the story is that Sana got on the last train out of Partition, right? And that Sana got separated but found her way back to the train via a trail of stars, which was obviously Aisha using her powers to help. Sana never sees her mom after that, right? So idk, maybe Aisha does vanish? But Nani sends the bangle before the wedding, so is that the bangle from the flashback or the one that was missing in the flashback? (The fact that the guy in the temple says they need 2 and they don't know what will happen if they use only 1 also seems a really compelling reason to maybe not have Kamala try to send them home?!)
Also, Kamran is part-human (like Kamala -- and nicely gets set up with Najma's comment about how the bangle unlocked Kamala's powers and so maybe something else will do the same for him). How did Najma end up with a kid? She does not seem like someone who would want to be saddled with responsibility for another creature, and yet Kamran is so well-adjusted and kind &c.
I was bummed that Kamala didn't tell her parents -- after the whole thing about family, and not facing things alone -- but I guess it makes sense after Nakia's negative reaction. (Sidebar: I loved Nakia pushing back on the Damage Control Agents, and also winning a seat on the mosque board. I understand why she had the concerns she did about Night Light, and why she was upset that Kamala didn't tell her, but I was still sad. I loved Kamala's conversation with, Sheikh Abdullah, was it? "Good isn't a thing you are. It's a thing you do." was in the trailer, I believe, and I'd been waiting for it the whole series -- I haven't read any of the comics, but it's one of the few things I know.)
Love that Nani saw the train and wants Kamala and her mom to come to Karachi. No idea how tf Kamala is gonna get that to happen (and we only have 3 episodes left!), but...
(Speaking of having so few episodes left: I was definitely surprised that Bruno decided to go to Caltech, but given the short time remaining, I suspect that will be left unresolved for Season 2.)

today:
my partner:[The book my partner was actually thinking of was _ A Master of Djinn_ by P. Djèlí Clark -- which I read significantly more recently and talked up a bunch.]
What was the jinn book you read, babe?
I suppose I can just go stalk you on Goodreads.
me:
I mean, I was like, "Which one? I think you mean _Alif the Unseen_ -- the one that mentioned djinn being in the Quran -- but I'm gonna pull up my djinn tag."
Oh, it occurs to me that _Alif the Unseen_ is by G. Willow Wilson -- who created Ms. Marvel.
my partner:
Also, Rabia says there are Ten Rings symbols visible in the flashback scene. I’m looking for them right now.
She also pointed out, relevant to the blue arm, that Krishna is blue.

right but maybe it'll be like an origin story of where Krishna came from and maybe he is Kree or whatever Yondu's race is+
