I'm so not all about the conspiracy theories regarding the Columbia.
However, i do find it interesting (in a non-conspiratorial way) that all the space tragedies have occurred so near each other datewise.
Apollo 1: January 27, 1967
The Challenger: January 28, 1986
The Columbia: February 1, 2003

Subject: My own conspiracy theory
Last night in his State of the Union address, President Bush proposed spending $1.2 billion on developing an "H car," a car that would run on hydrogen. Now, hydrogen fuel cells are wonderful things. Compared to internal combustion engines they are clean and quiet. And though they are much more expensive at the moment, the price is coming down. And hydrogen is not nearly as dangerous as many people think.
But there is one basic problem. Plain hydrogen doesn't exist in nature. It always comes combined in something. Hydrogen fuel has to be manufactured, and it takes a lot of energy to break all those chemical bonds and free it up. So where can you get all that energy from? You can burn oil, but the idea is "to reduce our dependence on oil." You can burn coal, but that produces CO2 and soot. There aren't many places left to dam that won't give you environmental problems. Wind won't provide much power. And just about everyone worries about nuclear. That leaves solar, but you need a lot of area with very few people and a lot of sun.
The coming war in Iraq is to make that country a giant solar collector.
