I used to have that Romero quote (I have no citation, either, I was given it at a strategic planning weekend) up on my wall at work (when I was a lawyer). I really ought to dig it out and find space for it on my pinboard at home.
As for TRUE stories: I realised that when I said that And Both Were Young was my first L'Engle, I meant of course my first fictional L'Engle. On charis_kalos' recommendation I read The Rock that is Higher: Story as Truth, which is L'Engle talking about such things. Still haven't reviewed it on GoodReads because my relationship to that book is very complicated (although I'm trying to write up something about differing reaction to the L'Engle and the book I recently finished called A Pilgrim Way, and hope I'll post that by tomorrow. Assuming I can get it to make sense.)
